Default My last 25 years with a KitchenAid mixer

Guess I'll have to get a new KitchenAid mixer! Yeah, right!

It's getting a little late in life to be thinking about stuff like this!

So it broke. What's your point? Mechanical and electrical stuff wears
out and breaks down. You got two years out of a refurbed unit. Has your
two year old car or computer needed any service in that time?

I purchased a KitchenAid in the early 1980's and the speed would only run

at 2, and the handle was so very difficult to raise, so much so that you
could see the metal filings alongside where they accumulated from raising
the handle.
The repair service in Virginia told me that it would cost around $280 to

repair the unit - refused by me -- and they sold me a refurbished 5 qt
KitchenAid October 15, 2003.

What I don't understand is your timeline... When you purchased the mixer
in the early 1980s, was it at this point that it would only run at 2 and
the handle was difficult to raise? Or did this not happen until sometime
in 2003 just prior to you purchased a refurbished unit?

Personally, at this point in time I don't think I would buy a KA mixer,
although I've had very good service from the one I bought in eaarly 1970s.
I think I'd look at the Viking.

I probably shouldn't have put the information that I had had another KA that
I bought in the 80's (that KA didn't work well for me), and it is the 80's
one that I tried to have fixed at the authorized KA repair shop who said
that they would fix the 80s KA for $280; but that for the same $280 price,
they would sell me the refurbished one and wave the $80 opening up fee on
the 80's KA. Since they were the repair shop that was making the offer on
the refurbished one and they had waived the $80 fee for opening the 80's KA
up, I felt in an obligated way to buy the refurbished 2003 one from them. I
could have bought one at Costco for around $250 at that time as I recall (18
months ago).

Personally, at this point in time I don't think I would buy a KA mixer,
although I've had very good service from the one I bought in eaarly 1970s.

I just paid $100 for a KA attachment ravioli maker perhaps two months ago
(from Amazon) and if I don't get another KA, I'll be loosing out on it. --
Tis a puzzle.
Thanks, Wayne.

I think the real mistake was in not getting the Hobart version of the
KA mixer fixed. My husband had to have one of the 325 watt mixers
even though it was still 5 quarts. Started leaking oil and the speed
selector did not work right while still in warranty. Got it exchanged
for a new one at no cost. Traded with my son to get my Hobart version
back.

We also have an Electrux Magic Mill that works very well for breads
especially. I also have my KA out and I tend to use it more
especially for smaller quantities. The MM can take up to 5 pounds of
flour.

What i dont get is why are they using a oil with the consistency of auto oil
in a the gears when they should be using some sort of thicker material.

The rule goes that if it has gears or slides, it requires lube , if it spins
it requires oil.

I work for KitchenAid, and I can assure you that it is EXTREMELY rare
for there to be oil drainage out of our mixers UNLESS they have been
stored on their sides for some amount of time (not saying that was the
case for Dee). The oil properties have been established and used for
almost 70 years, and I am very confident this formulation is very
appropriate for the KitchenAid gear box.

I have a KSM90, purchased in 1987, that has started dripping oil, although
not as bad as Dee's. My mixer has NEVER been stored on it's side, so
obviously there is another reason for the problem. If, as you imply, the
dripping is not a problem with the "oil properties", maybe it's a problem
with the gear box iteself. Any ideas?
