I am thinking of a trip in January, is there any decent beer in Berlin or does Amsterdam offer more variety Amsterdam offers more variety, simply because there are some great beer bars the Wildeman, Gollem, 't Arendsnest, de Zotte, and a others, as well as interesting corner pubs ("cafes") that reflect the city's own beer culture. Beers from neighboring Belgium are also prominent, especially at the specialty cafes mentioned above, with the exception of 't Arendsnest, which specializes in Netherlands-produced beers; no others need apply. Berlin pubs tend to have less variety; most pubs have a small selection of German lagers, maybe a house Pilsner, a black lager, another Pilsner, a couple of bottled beers, maybe even a Bavarian wheat beer, and some will also pour you a Berliner Weisse if they have it. Corner pubs are thick on the ground, and they tend to be like this. There are bright spots here and there, though; there are a few brewpubs scattered around the city, like the Lindenbrau in Potsdamer Platz or the Luisenbrau near Charlottenburg Palace, and there is "The House of 100 Beers," also called "Mommseneck," with two locations; 15 beers on draught, another 100 in bottles, and there's quite a variety on. You'll also probably try eastern German Pilsners and black lagers you've not seen elsewhere. HTH. -- dgs |

I am thinking of a trip in January, is there any decent beer in Berlin
or does Amsterdam offer more variety... Not only variety, but quality. I grew up on German beer, I still love a few of them, but the Reinheitsgebot and the mythology surrounding it, along with chauvinism while the few German styles decline in quality, make BeNeLux the beer mecca. Unfortunately, more Be then Ne, but you can get many Belgian beers and Belgian-oriented brews in the Netherlands. I stopped over in Utrecht in August, and the selection at local pubs and shops was outstanding, but you can still do well in Amsterdam too. This website is VERY nice and will include both Berlin and Amsterdam listings: http://www.xs4all.nl/~patto1ro/ |

I agree. I love both Dutch and German beers, but Belgian beers are a
work of art! I'm going to Belgium on a self-propelled beer lovers tour late in November. 6 days in Belgium and 2 days in Cologne Germany just to round things out. Can't wait!
