Korbel is a winery, and far from the Czech Republic. There is more than one "Korbel." In this case, it's Pivovar Korbel, Malý Rohozec, in the Czech Republic. Not the same thing as Velkopopvicky Kozel at all. The Korbel beers are interesting and distinctive. The brewery is quite small, comparable to an American microbrewery in output. Yes, Kozel is fantastic, especially the dark. The 10-degree dark's okay. Zlatopramen and Primator are pretty good as the more commercial beers go. Rychtar beers, from the Hlinsko brewery, are worthwhile too. Been enjoying one of the Primator bock beers. Very nice. Pretty impressive stuff, too. One of my favorite Czech beers would have to be Mestan dark, but I am not sure it even exists anymore. It's still a brand produced by Prague Breweries, but most of their output seems to be concentrated on Staropramen, their main brand. I thought the pilsner (style) produced by the loal brewery in Cesky Krumlov was one of the best I found in my travels there. The Eggenberger pale lager? Great beer, especially at the brewery's beer hall in Cesky Krumlov. That place suffered from the floods of 2002. -- Nobody You Know Ever tried Policka, Nova Paka and Dacicky (Kutná Hora) ? The municipal brewery in Policka also has a hotel and a beer garden. The town itself is worth a visit. I wasn't too impressed with Rychtar. Haven't tried Korbel since 1992, but still remember it. For my own beer ratings from Czech R etc, see: http://www.honsi.org/beer/log/index.html Jomar Hønsi, Oslo http://www.honsi.org |
