Default brew pubs in NYC

I'm goin' to be coming down Metro-North into Grand Central Station this
week for an appointment in the city, and on my way out I would like to
hang around and go to an awesome brewpub -- only condition is that it
needs to be subway accessible, or at least a short taxi to one.

What are ya'lls suggestions?

Heartland Brewing has a place north of Times Square, not sure the exact
address. Their Oatmeal Stout was great, thought the other beers were
pretty good. Food was so-so and overpriced, but I've learned to expect
that in brewpubs.

Dan Iwerks thinks that the beer you're drinking probably sucks.

While not a brew pub per se, The Ginger Man at 11 East 36th St. has an
incredible selection of beers on tap, a nice atmosphere and a decent bar menu.
Walk down Madison about six blocks and take a right on 36th and it's in the
middle of the block.

While not a brew pub per se, The Ginger Man at 11 East 36th

St.[...]

That's a fine choice as a bar. Unfortunately, New York City is down
to a small handful of brewpubs:

- the Heartland mini-chain: four locations in the city, nearest one
on 43rd near Broadway (127 West 43rd Street), a couple of passable
beers but nothing "awesome";
- Times Square Brewery, newly reopened, on the west side of Broadway
at 42rd St., not "awesome" by any stretch of the imagination: a few
beers, nothing particularly good though I hear the Porter isn't half-
bad;
- Typhoon Brewery is in the same boat as the others (22 W. 54th).
Uninspired brewer, no urgency to create something beergeeks will
drink as the clientele is the wrong crowd for good beer (apparently);
and
- Chelsea Brewing, at Pier 59? around 23rd St. or so on the Hudson
River, which makes decent to ****ING GOOD beers (especially their
rotating lineup of stouts) but is not exactly easy to get to. They're
next to the bowling alley at Chelsea Piers.

Brooklyn Brewery is only open Friday nights from 6-10, and it's just
a tasting room.

That's it for establishments making their own beer in New York City
these days.

You're really much better off with Ginger Man from where you're
located. If your need to eat with your beer goes beyond
sandwiches, and don't mind a short walk, Waterfront Ale House (30th
and 2nd Ave.) has a rather nice beer menu to go with a good, if a
little puffed-up, menu. The Oyster Bar at GCT also has a better-than-
you'd-expect beer list, too.

And you can always check out Pubcrawler for a list of bars in that
area, should you choose to not take advantage of the inherent honesty
of those who write on newsgroups.

They've gotten better then, than the one time I was there with you and those
Ager and Brockington kids who never hang around here anymore. As I recall,
the stuff was off. Of course, we were quite off as well, so I'm doing well
to remember that we were even there.

Nothing on Staten Island? That's unbelievable.
