Default Nuremberg: recommendations please

I am planning a trip to Bavaria.

At the moment my itinerary is:

Munich -- 2 nights
Nuremberg -- 2 nights

I have been to Munich Oktoberfest several times and love the beer from
the main Munich breweries: Pauliner, Augustiner, Hofbrau, Lowenbrau
etc. So I am thinking of maybe changing to:

Munich -- 3 nights
Nuremberg -- 1 night

so I can visit more Munich pubs & beer halls!

My questions:

* Do Nuremberg pubs serve the same Munich beers?
* Any Nuremberg breweries whose beer is worth a try?

Very smart move.

Such a short trip! How's about Bamberg instead of Nuernberg?

If I were to guess, I'd venture to guess in the affirmative.
I've not yet been to Nuernberg.

I've had very good results from using this guy's guides to
other cities:

Four days? This is a "trip to Bavaria" ? When are you going? I
understand the situation of being an American with limited travel and
vacation time, but four days seems so short...

If you've been to Munich several times, I'd suggest that it's time
to broaden your horizons with more beer-drinking time in Franconia.
Even in Munich, I'd suggest some trips to less well-known places in
the suburbs, for a touch of that Bavarian "country pub culture."

My questions:

* Do Nuremberg pubs serve the same Munich beers?
* Any Nuremberg breweries whose beer is worth a try?

Nick beat me to recommending Ron Pattinson's series of German pub
guides. The one for Nuremberg is to be found at
http://www.xs4all.nl/~patto1ro/nurnpubs.htm. Nuremberg may not be
as lively and bustling as Munich, but don't give it short shrift.
For one thing, you could easily make a day trip to Forchheim or
Bamberg from Nuremberg. Forchheim's little brewpubs aren't as
lively or as well-known as the ones in Bamberg, but they're well
worth trying, and three of them are located very close to each other.
It's an easy half-hour train ride to Forchheim from Nuremberg, too.

The trip to Bamberg takes a bit longer, but this city is one of the
single most rewarding beer destinations in Germany. If you're going
when the weather is nice, that's even more true, as there will be
excellent opportunities for outdoor beer-drinking. Bamberg is home
to the superb Schlenkerla pub, where Brauerei Heller's world-famous
smoked beers come in three styles, and where even the unsmoked Helles
has a bit of smoke flavor to it. Both the Faessla and the Spezial
brewpubs are withing walking distance of the train station. How can
you resist?

As for Nuremberg itself, there's the Altstadhof brewery, with its old-
fashioned unfiltered Kellerbier. There is a small group of pubs
serving beers from regional small breweries. There are the beers from
Tucher, the remaining big brewery in Nuremberg. Read
http://www.bambergbeerguide.com/disc...asp?IDKEY=ZZXT for some
more details on pub visits in the Franconian capitol.

I second the mentioning of this brewpub. Their schwarzbier is possibly the
best I've ever tried.

There's another brewpub, Barfüsser in the oppposite corner of the walled
city.

Just south of the wall you'll find a good beer store, Landbierparadies, on
Schlossäckerstrasse 26.

If you go in nice enough weather to sit outdoors, go to Kloster
Andechs, about 45 minutes south of Munich on a hilltop above the
Ammersee. It's walking distance up the hill from the town of
Herrsching which can be reached on the S-Bahn from downtown Munich.
Nice daytrip to a monastery where the monks brew a fine beer.

Bamburg about

Bamberg. That "e" has an importance if one wants to use a search engine...

an hour (give or take) north of Nuremberg
has great beer: smoke maerzens.

Rauchbiers, that is beers containing beech-smoked malt. Not all of them
are Märzens, as both Spezial brews an amber lager and an Urbock that are
smoked as well. Schlenkerla also brew mor than the ubiquitous Märzen,
offering as well a Rauch-Hefe-Weizen, and an Urbock.

There are also a couple of breweries there that
have hotel rooms above them.

Notably Spezial and Fässla, whcih are opposite one another, roughly
halfway between the city centre and the train station

Cheers !
