Was scanning the "warm single beer" shelf were so many stores like to
keep their most expensive imports under the bright lights out of the dark cooler and came across a beer I'd never seen: "MaDonna White Beer- Traditional Belgian Brew from S. C. Marten SA." ....Hmmm...brewery rings a bell.... "Product of Romania" Price was about a buck and a half for a 11.2 oz. steinie-style bottle. |

Perhaps not so surprisingly, the Romanian brewery is owned (67 percent) by a Belgian brewery, Brouwerij Martens. However, SFAIK the Belgian Martens does not make a wit, so the Romanian version could be test marketing or perhaps a cheaper way of exporting. |

They do not make strictly speaking, a wit, but they have a wit (Limburgse Witte) in their portfolio, which a smaller Limburg brewer (St. Jozef) makes on their demand. It has a rather confidential distribution. The recipe was a collaboration, officially, between both Limburg brewers. Martens themselves are to busy making... Pilsener for Germany. JorisP |

"Martens themselves are to busy making... Pilsener for Germany." Hi Joris, LOL! Buying Pilsener from Martens in Germany is the cheapest and easiest way to buy Belgian beer here ;-) Recently I saw an article on the internet where someone claimed that the Karlsquell beer is now brewed from Martens and not any longer in Germany. If they had read the printing on the can some years ago, they would know that it is Belgian for a long time. Funny thing! Prost, Bastian |
