Yes, it's not beer, but I know some of you are bourbon lovers, and I thought
you'd like to know. Booker Noe, the distiller emeritus of Jim Beam and Jim Beam's grandson, died in his sleep last night. Booker was rightly a legend in the business, a real distiller who became a spokesman for both Jim Beam bourbon and the whole industry. His signature bourbon, Booker's, was a first -- uncut, unfiltered, just the way Booker liked to drink it. I enjoyed Booker's company, I continue to enjoy his whiskey. So I celebrate his life, but I do mourn his death. Malt Advocate is honored to publish his eulogy next issue, provided to us by Jim Kokoris of Jim Beam, who wrote the eulogy and will be delivering it at Booker's funeral. Go with God, Booker; I'm sure he's got whiskey waiting for you. -- Lew Bryson www.LewBryson.com Author of "New York Breweries" and "Pennsylvania Breweries," 2nd ed., both available at www.amazon.com The Hotmail address on this post is for newsgroups only: I don't check it, or respond to it. Booker Noe, the distiller emeritus of Jim Beam and Jim Beam's grandson, died in his sleep last night. Sad news. My impression was that he was a big driver behind the whole "small-batch" movement and the increasing respectibility of bourbon as quality beverage. It's always tough on an industry when one of its best-known spokesmen goes. -Steve |

I've always wondered: if he is Jim Beam's grandson, why isn't his name Booker Beam? Because when daughters marry, their children have a different surname. Right: Booker was the son of one of Jim's daughters, Margaret, who married Frederick Booker Noe. Booker was their son, and his son, Freddie Noe, is named for his grandfather. There are other Beams working in the business. Parker Beam and his son Craig are the master distillers at Heaven Hill (every drop of Heaven Hill has been distilled by a Beam, something Jim Beam can't say anymore); the distiller at Michter's was a Beam. Toddy Beam owns a liquor store in Bardstown (great for finding odd bottlings you may not find elsewhere). -- Lew Bryson www.LewBryson.com Author of "New York Breweries" and "Pennsylvania Breweries," 2nd ed., both available at www.amazon.com The Hotmail address on this post is for newsgroups only: I don't check it, or respond to it.
