So I'm a big beer fan for the most part and I've been working at a new
local bar near Cleveland (Brewkeeper on Center Ridge Road in North Ridgeville, Ohio . . . a shameless plug, I know). Well, we have a brew-on-premise facility that my boss tells me is one of two in the area (The Brew Kettle near Strongsville being the other). I have a bunch of people who are interested in coming in to brew, so it got me to thinking: How big is the BOP market in Ohio and surrounding states? I've heard of plenty of microbreweries (I mean, we carry Bell's Two- Hearted out of MI, I've been to visit the Jolly Pumpkin) but now I'm starting to get interested in doing my own batches. I don't know exactly how to go about looking for other BOPs to do it at (don't want to take up one of our kettles myself) but if there is one close and with a short waiting list similar to my own brewery... I could definitely be interested. From Behind the Bar, -B.A.T. [Currently Slinging Suds At: The Brewkeeper 34445 Center Ridge Road North Ridgeville, OH 44039] |

I use a BOP once a year for 15 gallons of an Imperial IPA because my equipment will only produce 6 gallon batches. So in my rarely humble opinion, BOP's are cool. What should attract people is the cost. I use the Flying Barrel in Frederick, Maryland (only BOP I know of in MD) and they charge $95 for 5 gals and $125 for 10 gals - includes LME, hops, and yeast. I do a mini-mash the night before and bring it with me. At your BOP, - Do people have to bring their own ingredients? - Is their an all-grain setup or is it extract only? - Is it also a LHBS (Local Home Brew Store)? - What is the batch size limit? Dick |
