Default New charcoal every time?

Hey guys,

I have a 18.5 inch Weber charcoal grill, and I just bought a chimney
starter to light the coals. My instruction manual suggests I use 40
briquettes.

My question is, do I need to use 40 briquettes each and every time I
grill? Or can I use, say 20 next time, in hopes that they will light
the briquettes from the previous grilling?

Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!
John

Once you start burning a briquette, it is just a loose lump of "stuff" after
it goes out or gets wet. It may light, but don't count on it doing much
good. You'll find yourself just tossing them with the ash.

As was said before, lump. I haven't used briquettes since I
read what was in them BLECH.

Okay, I'll probably be sorry for asking . . . but what's in
briquettes? And where would I find lump?

Thanks!

Briquettes contain coal dust http://new.cbbqa.com/wood/Kingsford.html gives
the list. What they call mineral carbon as a nice name for coal.

Trader Joe has lump. Some restaurant suppliers carry it.

Yuck. I guess it's true that ignorance is bliss. I had no idea
all that junk was in charcoal briquettes!

Phooey. We don't have a Trader Joe's. Thanks!

No. I don't think you'll be sorry for asking. While you're waiting for a

Smart & Final does, too. Year 'round and in big bags. So do places like
Hardware stores and Garden Supply stores, Wal-Mart, Home Despot, etc.

Unfortunately, evidently all Wal-Mart's, nor Home Depot's do. Nor Lowe's
for that matter. I've yet to be able to find lump charcoal anywhere in my
area, at any of those places anyway... and even checked the Home Depot an
hour away.

That's one of the reasons I bought the gas smoker. Briquettes burning in
that little Brinkman I had, no way I could keep a steady temp for 8-12hrs
trying to do a brisket. At least with the GOSM I have, the flame stays lit
as long as I have enough fuel. *g* So far I've used it a good 30+hrs since
the last full tank was bought, and there's probably still half a tank
left(typical 201b tank).

I'd love to get a BGE, but without being able to find lump charcoal
locally.... *shrug*

Where's "your area"? I've heard people in "my area" (New Jersey, which
is gas grill country) say they can't find lump- yet I have access to
about 6 different brands at twice as many retailers (regional
supermarkets, mom & pop groceries, Agways, Ace/Do-It-Best local hardware
stores) within a 20 mile radius. I'm sure someone in your area knows
where to buy it or order it -hint- forget the BIG BOX chains, find a
local retailer (garden, grill, hardware, specialty food) who'll order it
for you.

Do you have a Tru-Value Hardware nearby? If they don't carry it, ask
the manager to order you some. Googling this group should turn up a
part number for it.

Western MD... very small/rural area. No Home Depot locally, one about an
hour or so away, have a Lowes, and of course two Wal-Mart supercenters
within about 20miles of each other, but not much of anything else. I know I
can order it, but I want to make sure I can get something local before I
shell out the money for a BGE. A friend of mine just got one this spring,
unfortunately I haven't run into him lately to find out where he's getting
the charcoal or if he's ordering it or what.

We don't have much luck finding it here, either, and we're in central
Floriduh. We can get Cowboy lump, but, heck, that's not really lump, is it?

How about Gordon Food Services, aka GFS? Ours carries 20 lb bags of Red
Oak lump for under $10.

Good luck with your search!
