There isn't a lot of room on my apartment balcony for a conventional
BBQ. So instead I have a single burner portable gas stove which packs into a attache style case. This can be used with skillet, small wok or a Korean style BBQ plate. The stoves come from a lot of different makers are an inexpensive (around $AU25) http://www.tomw.net.au/2001/sa/bbq.shtml. There isn't a lot of room for one of those monster BBQs. So I suggested a small single burner tabletop gas stove is a good alternative. ps: I noticed the Korean BBQ plates I previously mentioned are less than $AU10.00 at the supermarket. These have the advantage that you can fit them in a dishwasher, unlike the plate on a normal BBQ. What can you possibly do outside on the patio using your portable gas stove... .... that I couldn't do indoors? Well I couldn't BBQ indoors. In Australia a "barbie" is outdoor cooking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbecue#Etymology. The guests would feel shortchaged if it was indoors and it would inhibit them from barbie customs, such as wearing a beer carton as a hat. ;-) On a more practical note, when I tried BBQ style cooking in the apartment the fire alarm activated. ps: The WikiPedia BBQ entry is not quite correct in attributing the phrase "I'll slip an extra shrimp on the barbie for you" to Paul Hogan. In Australia a shrimp is called a "prawn". I recommend prawns lightly grilled with some vinegar, tomato, garlic and black pepper marinate http://www.tomw.net.au/tomoil.htm. And, no, I am not selling marinate, the web page just has a free recipe on it. I am an IT consultant. I put a few recipes and travel stories on the web site as otherwise all the stuff about metadata and Internet policy is a bit dull. Tom Worthington Director, Tomw Communications Pty Ltd http://www.tomw.net.au/ PO Box 13, Belconnen ACT 2617 Australia Please read the BBQ FAQ. There is no way in hell that you can make BBQ on a single tabletop burner. BBQ by definition in this group is poor cuts of meat cooked for a long time at low cooking temperatures. Please describe how you plan to accomplish that with a single burner stove. Please be advised that Korean or Mongolian BBQ bear no resemblance whatsoever to South Carolina BBQ. (Not that Korean and Mongolian BBQ aren't good. They're just not American BBQ.) -- Brick (Paddling ever slower) |

He doesn't have to describe anything. The group charter includes grilling. You might want to check minor details like this before opening your mouth. http://groups.google.com/group/alt.appalachian/browse_frm/thread/f39b876c8c8bd781/ba63ddb5379327a9?lnk=st&q=group%3Aalt.appalachian& rnum=7&hl=en#ba63ddb5379327a9 -- Reg |

You're right, Reg, but I think Brick was just trying to get him on the right track with the terminology, ie what BBQ is. I don't think he was saying that the OP couldn't post grill-related info here. -- Dave www.davebbq.com |
