This is a serious although perhaps naive question so no flames please.
Whattya do with the ashes that accumulate in the fire box of a smoker? Is there a practical use for them in a garden, lawn etc? I've only been BBQin a short time and I've already had to empty my Charm Glow Silver fire box twice and don't know what to do with the stuff. Hat to just throw it out if it can serve a purpose. Thanks, Tom in Howell, NJ |

Hat to just throw it out if it can serve a purpose. Good question Tom. Being from the hills of Tennessee, I'm predisposed to just toss 'em in the woods. However, since relocating to a somewhat civil area near Tampa, Fl., I tend to just dump them in the most unused part of the yard that won't be seen from the street. Rain pretty much takes care of it. It's most beneficial use as near as I can figure is that it keeps me out of the wife's way for a few hours a month. Cheers, TFM® |

Wood ashes and charcoal ashes can be used to sweeten soil. Spread it around your daffodils or any place where the soil is too acid. Charcoal ashes are useless. Send them to a transfer station. Maybe they can find a way to dispose of them Matthew -- Thermodynamics and/or Golf for dummies: There is a game You can't win You can't break even You can't get out of the game |

Reckon you shoulda rectified that you meant 'lump' charcoal in the first paragraph. Otherwise it could be misleading. I'm with Matthew. Wood ash is a good thing. Ash from Kingsford or other such trash is not wood ash. I don't know what it is, so don't ask. I know what it ain't. TFM® |

I burn both coal and wood on an open fire during the winter months and have been digging the ashes into my vegetable plot for years and have never experienced a problem. Not only have I found it to be good for the soil, but weed control is a lot easier as you can pull the weeds, roots and all, with the minimum of effort. Graeme |
