Probably wouldn't have saved your engine, but a better patch than duct
tape for a blown hose is one of the rubber couplings sold at plumbing
supply stores, the kind used to join two pieces of cast-iron pipe.
They come in a variety of diamaters and attach with two hose clamps.
I carry a couple in my truck, but so far have only had to use one to
repair someone else's blown radiator hose.

Looks like oil starvation up a hill + the already hot conditions + lots
of load = spun rod bearing I'd be amazed if it wasn't kncocking for a
while befoer the rod broke. Was it?

If you like carrying around a flex coupling for each hose OD permutaion,
have at it but I would not recommend it. Flex couplings like a rigid
surface underneath. The hoseclamps will crush the hose and will not seal
very well

I'd just have a roll of seal healing tape around, or ductape and plastic
wrap/bag.

Okay, more info for you mechanically inclined folks:

1) The did engine begin knocking as I was struggling up a hill with no
power. This is when I pulled off and found the radiator hose leak.
The leak was a smallish slit in the bottom of the radiator hose...I
think that while navigating some rough terrain earlier in the morning
the alternator fan may have nicked the bottom of the hose and caused
the leak. As the leak was pointing straight down just to the left
side of the engine, it didn't cause any noticiable steam while I was
driving...

After I let the engine cool down I patched the hose with duct tape and
two large zip ties .: This patch held...it was not the problem beyond
this point.

I eyed the radiator fluid level and it seemed the radiator was about
3/4 full. This may have been my mistake. I added a little water to
the radiator and figured that this plus the amount of coolant in the
overflow container would suffice. I now think that I misjudged the
amount of coolant in the radiator.

2) It is also possible that I had put a hole in the oil pan earlier in
the day and had not noticed it. That morning, right after leaving the
desert I had gone on a little dirt side road to show my daughter an
art installation that used to be there. Unfortunately this road was
in disrepair and had two places where it had been washed out during
the winter, leaving some large rocks across where the roadbed had
been. I had to do some x-country to get back to the road proper and
may have bounced the oilpan off of a few rocks once too many times.

3) The engine was knocking fairly steadily while we were crawling
along the highway. I stopped twice to let the engine cool down and
seemed to not have the knocking getting any worse when we came to the
last hill. While trying to get up that hill I had to rev the engine
up...and that was what finally killed it (even though it was clear by
that time that at the very least I would have needed some major engine
work regardless.


4) When I went to see the mechanic first thing tuesday morning and
told him my tale, he said to me: "I've got some good news, and some
bad news...The good news is that I just happen to have an exact model
engine for your car all set up and dressed to be installed - one of
our customers ordered it for her '89 Chevy pickup. I checked with her
and she's not in a hurry to get her truck back so we may be able to
put it in today. Bad news is it will run you about 3 Grand plus."

He actually would have had it done by that afternoon if I hadn't done
so much damage to the poor engine. Every now and then he'd come by
to let me know things like..."Man, you really did a number on that
engine....the crankshaft looks like it....well, exploded...." and the
harmonic balancer needed to be replaced..

Anyway, but the time he had figured out the additional parts he'd
needed it was too late to get them delivered, so we had to wait until
the next day.

The new engine just purrs and hopefully will be good for another
100,000 miles (if I can afford to put gas in the thing for that long).

Oh, and to try and make this almost on topic, I had brought 65 lbs of
pulled pork (which I had smoked, then vacuum sealed and froze) to the
desert and fed my campmates. The unanimous verdict was that I made
some pretty good 'que. This also helped in my later cause as a number
of my campmates chipped in over $1,000.00 to my new engine fund.

SWEET! That is a nice group you hang with. 3K isn't that bad of a deal
exspecially since he did it in such a short period of time. Hell, it
took me 5 hours just to remove the supercharger and intercoolers
lastnight from my Z28 racer. Isn't it nice to know that BBQ is work 15
and change per lb.

While I sympathize with your experience on the camping trip, I
wonder why you don't simply have "Emergency Road Service Insurance".
Mine costs about $7.00/yr. I get towed about once every other year, with
a typical bill of about $45 US. I simply do not understand destroying an
engine for want of a simple phone call even if one doesn't have the insurance.
Hundreds vs thousands at the end. I'm probably preaching to the choir. Only
my Ex would drive a car until it refused to move any further. Oh well, I guess
there's an exception.

A very good point you make. I actually DO have emergency road service
insurance (so, actually the charge for the tow I will be reimbursed
for.), HOWEVER, two points I should make. The point at which the
initial (and pretty major) damage was done came before I knew anything
was wrong: When I first realized there was a problem (broken hose)
was also when the knock appeared...all as I suddenly found myself
struggling up to the top of a hill on which there was no shoulder to
pull off onto. By the time I did crawl over to a pullout, the car was
knocking enough for me to know that I was in for major engine work at
least (and given the age of the vehicle and engine, I would have opted
for a rebuilt at that point anyway). Next, it was not as simple as
just calling for a tow. No cell service and the sherrif who stopped
and chatted with me while i was waiting for the engine to cool down
enough for me to repair the hose, indicated (correctly) that all of
the local tow trucks were at least 5 hours from being able to get to
any new calls. Those two facts led me to try to limp to the next town
(which, for the 3rd item in my excuse list), I thought to be a bit
closer than it actually was).

So, thinking that i was only about a 20 minute, reasonably flat drive
from where I was, AND thinking that I had enough water/coolant to keep
the engine reasonably cool enough to stem further damage, I rolled the
dice and tried to make it to the next town.

It really seemed like I would have made it if not for that one damned
little hill that we came across. The combination of the hill and the
fact that, again, there was no shoulder to the road when we hit that
hill made me push the engine to get us over it. That was the final
straw.
