Hi,
Being an European (Nowegian) living in Texas I am just beginning to learn the art of BBQ, and other food traditions for that matter. When it comes to holidays we have settled for what's clearly the culinart tradition for the holiday in question (like turkey on Thanksgiving etc.). However, tomorrow is 4th of July and I would like to know if there's any kind of "typical 4th of July" dishes I could throw at my smoker or grill tomorrow? It doesn't have to be a Texan tradition as long as it's something that someone prepares and eats on the 4th of July and thinks "God Save America!" Ideas anyone? -- //ceed ©¿©¬ |

I think those are the US standards. Anyone else have something to add? kili |

ASFAIK - There really isn't a "traditional" main course for the 4th. I've
seen everything from hot dogs 'n hamburgers to ribs, brisket, steak, chicken!! I have been looking for an excuse to do dark beer can chicken. Texas should have a good supply of Shiner Bock for the main seasoning. Have fun and enjoy this truly American holiday. Americans just like outdoor cooking. Sides include things like potato salad and cole slaw. For us, lunch is usually hot dogs or hamburgers, dinner is chicken, ribs, brisket, etc. Today I'm doing a chicken on the rotisserie. Tomorrow country ribs and pulled pork. |

Well, some baby backs with the trimmings on so they're ready as an appetizer. As long as I have things going I'll likely do a little venison ham to have around for sandwiches over the next week. Sides will include three potato salad and corn on the cob. Allen |

I think the tradition for the 4th of July is the grilling/bar-b-que part. Any meat you can wrangle onto the grate without it putting up too much of a fight and climbing back off is fair game. Bill I gotta agree with Bill, anything that you can wrangle onto a grill is pretty much a July 4th meal! At my house, I'm doing a pork butt, a couple slabs of ribs, potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, and my wife is baking/decorating a cake. She's makin it all 'purty to look like the American flag, I mean, how much more patriotic do you get than that? Hope everyone has a great 4th! B-Worthey |

Jeg snakker bare litt norsk so I'll post this in English... I'm an Afrowegian from the pacific northwest here. As others I'm sure are telling you, any grilled or barbecued meat is the general idea for the Fourth of July. As a way to ease into it, just take a pork loin that you would use for making Ribbe for Chrismas in Norway, rub it with some salt and pepper, forget about stuffing it with prunes, and just pop it on the grill. "Vær så god!" Hmmm....I see that Oslo is flooded this week and King Harald is out of the hospital... :-) a site about my first trip to Norway: http://www.chefjuke.com/norway/ -Chef Juke "EVERYbody Eats When They Come To MY House!" www.chefjuke.com |
