Their new place in NH opened last week, and we made our way in to give
it a go. Lots of folks in the waiting area, but there were 5 seats available at the bar. We jumped in and got served cold beer and appetizers in less than 15 minutes. Their little TV sound boxes(must be a re-design) had terrible sound, b t w. We each had ribs, some spares, some baby backs. Both were hot all the way through. They both had predominant with grill marks, evident of a re-heating just before serving. Slight crunchy crust yielded a very tender rib underneath. Not overcooked either. Smoke flavor, was mild to fair. Not over spiced or salty; I'd prefer a stronger smoke flavor with a bit more zip. Cornbread was sweet(when will these yankees ever learn), but the pecan butter which was delicious almost redeemed it. The beans were just superb. Had a better smoke quality than the ribs. Its about time though, that something passing for Q had arrived in Concord. Pierre |

This sounds like it's the same chain as the Smokey Bones I've been to
in Boca Raton, Florida. It's a good sports bar but at best so-so BBQ. If you're looking for decent Q in the Granite State, try Down & Dirty in Manchester. --THC ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tom Cormen Voice: (603) 646-2417 Professor of Computer Science Fax: (603) 646-1672 Director, Writing Program Email: Dartmouth College URL: http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~thc/ 6211 Sudikoff Laboratory Hanover, NH 03755-3510 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Despite the visible smoke outside I thought the Q could've had more flavor. Still, I'm not one to pass it up when I happen to travel that way. NickH |

Still, I'm not one to pass it up when I happen to travel that way. Back when I was a grad student living in a high-rise in Cambridge with no way to Q, I thought that the Yankee Smokehouse was pretty good. A buddy and I even had standing orders with each other to bring some back to Cambridge any time either of us was near West Ossipee. Now that I can make my own Q, I think the YS is pretty bad. Last time we were there, the quality of the meat was poor. It was way too fatty. The sauce was too sweet as well. We used to plan our hiking trips in the Whites so that we could end up at the YS. Now we don't bother with the YS. Don't bother with the place in Franconia, either. The best commercial Q I've had in NH is Down & Dirty in Manchester. There's also Curtis in Putney, VT. A friend of mine used to live there while I was in grad school, so we thought that Curtis was great. I hadn't eaten there in over 15 years when we tried it again this year. It was still pretty good. Then we tried it again a few weeks later. We got there right before closing. We got huge portions, but the meat had dried out. --THC ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tom Cormen Voice: (603) 646-2417 Professor of Computer Science Fax: (603) 646-1672 Director, Writing Program Email: Dartmouth College URL: http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~thc/ 6211 Sudikoff Laboratory Hanover, NH 03755-3510 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

I also find Down n Dirty about the most authentic you can find in these
parts. My last two times in there, were not up to par. The owner on a reduced work schedlue if he's there at all, has relegated much of the preparation and running the place to a couple of well intended teenagers. They're open just 4 days per week, and the ribs ordered mid afternoon tasted like it had been kept in a warming oven for a few hours, and heated to order. Not very upbeat. Great smokey character though. Sides, as always were right on. Their sausage, forget about it. Dry, chewey and lifeless. Had to be an off day, as this guy usually knows his stuff. Needs sauce for any possible redemption. The place does have some charm though, from the Cajun music to the 5 tables available. Enjoy the cream soda. Smells just right too when you walk in. Pierre |

Too bad the meat quality has gone down-hill. It was still busy that last time I was there. Good location to catch all the traffic for 25 and 16, though. Nick |

Living on the seacoast, and Smokey bones just opened near Portsmouth in
Newington. Sounds like I'll wait 'till the furor dies down before I try iy. Thanks for the info on Down and dirty....didn't know it was there....any chance of getting a street address, so I can find it? I also think the Yankee smokehouse is not that great...so-so meat with sauce to hide it-I'd rather buy twice as many ribs for the price and 'Que them myself! |
