That's a good one, alright. It's too bad Jamaica is such a dangerous place
to visit.

Nah, going to one of the all-inclusive resorts or having a day there

pushy salespeople, but they can generally be avoided.

Now deciding to drop into Kingston as a tourist without any protection
or guide would be an exceptionally bad idea.

It's too bad that some things never change. The situation in Jamaica in
1976 (when last I was there) was exactly as described, above.

Agree about the all-inclusives, etc. but being one who likes to drive a
rental car or a mini moke around the islands and get lost, I'll pass on
Jamaica. I just drove all over St. Vincent a few months ago and couldn't
have felt safer among the friendliest people I've met in a long time. Same
for Barbados, St. Martin, Aruba, Antigua, Tortola. Jamaica, well it's a
shame. Jerk is sooo good.

Default Jerk

I've made this recipe a couple of times (with some extra habanero) - the
Jamaicans at work say that the chicken I've cooked with it is pretty
authentic:

I wouldn't go to Tourist Gulag there on a bet, and after our last
cruise stop there, wouldn't even get off the ship. Beautifull Island,
but it's in a real mess.

I had an absolute blast in Ocho Rios and generally avoided the tourist
traps. Instead of doing the Falls, buying all sorts of wooden crafts,
and eating right near the port we hired a driver for the afternoon. 3+
hours of our driver taking us around in his van, showing us the real
sights, eating at a locals spot for jerk, going to a grocery store,
and getting plenty of narration made it an excellent day stop.

You were luckier than I was. Ocho Rios was a scheduled day trip on a cruise
I took years ago. The Falls was the biggest BS tourist trap I've ever seen
and that's just one reason I don't like cruises any more. Wish I had done
what you did, Dobbs. Local driver to real jerk sounds pretty good.

Jack,

I would take a look at the current offerings on Royal Caribbean's
mega-ships out of Miami. You could never leave the boat and have an
absolute blast. Much different than cruising even five years ago in
the amount and variety of onboard amenities and very reasonably priced
compared to many other continental vacations. The biggest thing one
should splurge on if budget is a concern is to have a room with a
balcony. The views and ability to sit 15 stories above the water while
relaxing or having a meal is well worth it.

Even the ultra-tourist Cozumel proved to be a foodie fun-spot with a
big central market about 5-10 minutes taxi ride from the port and
plenty of taco and carnitas stands.

had great success with Walkerswood jerk products, A
HREF="http://www.dvo.com/recipe_pages/grilln/Jerk-_The_Jamaican_Barbecue.h
tml"Jerk: The Jamaican Barbecue/A (walkerswood.com).

comparably in barbados, baxters road was a place in bridgetown you could go
most nights after midnight for some of the best (outdoor cooked) fish on the
island. when crime took hold in the early 90's - coincident to the
introduction of cable/satellite/video stores - baxters road died down to what
i've come to understand is not even every saturday night (cropover aside).
