Barbecue (alt.food.barbecue) Discuss barbecue and grilling--southern style "low and slow" smoking of ribs, shoulders and briskets, as well as direct heat grilling of everything from burgers to salmon to vegetables.

Default Gaskets for ceramic cookers

I have a large BGE. I do a lot more grilling than low and slow. We grill 3-5
times per week and low and slow once or twice a month. I've burned out the
gasket a couple of times in three years. Wondering if this happens with the
Kamado as well.

My K5 was new in Jan '02. I'm still running on the original gasket. I
do keep it as clean as possible-I keep a 2" nylon bristle paintbrush in
my Q kit to keep it brushed off.
I'd call K Co. and get some of their gasket rope for your Egg-it's
miles beyond the BGE felt stuff.

All of the gaskets on my Ks are in good shape despite several "nuke" cooks on
each. It's all in the material.

"RRP" in the "green room" (green egg forum) sells kits for the eggs using
Rutland gaskets (woven fiberglass, IIRC).
bk should give him a *PING* over there.

Kamado's gaskets are a ceramic weave, the egg gaskets are felt (no wonder they
burn out)

Thank you, I'm going to try that. If and when the egg ever dies, I'm replace
it with a K. But I don't envision it dieing in my lifetime.

I think you could probably get replacement gasket material at an auto parts
store. I use high-temp gasket goop to make a new gasket for my replacement
gas burner.
