Hi and a big WELCOME to AFB. :-) In order to get a flavor of what this
newsgroup spends most of its time talking about, please read the FAQ which is located at: http://www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/faq2/toc.html It is the best single-source document on traditional barbecue that I've yet to see. And that's what this NG is primarily focused on... traditional methods of BBQ. Most of us also use gas grills -- I myself use a Weber Genesis from time-to-time -- so grilling and other forms of outdoor cooking are sometimes talked about. It's just not the main focus for most of us here. This is a primary hang-out for a lot of hard-core BBQ "purists", and it's the main theme of this NG. So if you're a griller, and you have a recipe for ribs or pork which you think of as "bbq", don't be surprised or upset if we attempt to "show you the light". :-) The FAQ will help you understand the differences between grilling and barbecue, and why we will try to pull gas-grillers toward the light of real 'Q, and why we may use gentle corrections to wrongly-used terminology. Hopefully this post will help you avoid getting your feathered underwear into a ruffled knot, because we really want you to stay. And you may just decide that you need to set the gasser aside for hot dogs, hamburgers, and steaks, while picking up a wood-fired pit to 'Q the stuff dreams are made of. Best and Warm Regards to y'all. BG HINT: Trimming the posts to which you respond to, along with bottom or interleaved posting, is what we all prefer here. Dave |

Since you post this message regularly to new comers, would it be worthwhile to mention the fact that posting pictures to augment your messages should be done to alt.binaries.food where pictures are welcomed. Sure, that can be added. I think new folks would like to know that AFB exists where they can see photo examples of what we're yakking about. |

Yes, I would like to see some pics of some of the bbqs that are described here, especially some of the ones that are described as having large numbers of racks and meat hooks and so forth. From what I can gather some of the posters here must own barbeque pit restaurants, or at least it seems that way from hearing how much meat they are cooking on a regular basis!! Of course, it might help if they include their address...;-) |

If anybody cares, I have archived 6268 files since 03/12/03. Thats a lot of BBQ pictures. About 460mb total. Not a big impact on a 40gb disk. Looking back over them, it's just too hard to attribute individual pics to their originators. PCG000168.jpg don't mean a whole lot if you know what I mean. A title like backribs01.jpg doesn't do much to identify the poster. fos jumped on the wagon and inserts 'fos' in all (or most) of his titles. Some others have made an effort, but I'm to discombobblated right now to cite there names. I'd really like people to take credit for their pics by signing them in some way. -- M&M ("When You're Over The Hill You Pick Up Speed") |

I know that when I re-size and/or compress my pictures for posting, I like to save the original, so I *have* to give the resized picture a new name. This would be an *EXCELLENT* time to make the name fit the photographer and the occasion. I guess that what I'm trying to say here, is if you will keep reminding, we (me?) might eventually get it. BOB Thanks for your comments BOB. I can't explain why I feel so strongly about the issue and I am going to try not to babble about it too often. But one thing does come to mind and that's when somebody mentions that so-and-so posted picks of thus-and-such awhile back. I can search for a piece of the title and conveniently repost for the benefit of the group. OtherwiseI have to search the whole image base unless I have a reasonable date to work with. I'm usually too tired to go to that much trouble. Annotating the pic itself is pretty neat, but it takes time and is possibly even too difficult for some to waste their time learning how to do it. On top of that one cannot do a data search for content within the image, so that has limited benefit in support of reposts. -- M&M ("When You're Over The Hill You Pick Up Speed") |
