Based on my Google searches of this group, this sounds like the sort of
unit I am interested in purchasing. We will be vacationing down south
in August and I would like to pick one up.

Are there any stores around Portland, Oregon that would carry this
model? I'd love to save myself some shipping charges.

You'll probably do better buying online. Got mine from Gadgetsource and it
was cheaper with shipping than store price (BBQ Galore) & tax.

I got mine at http://www.overstock.com/ for $42 shipped but
they appear to have sold out :-(

I got a reply from Maverick, and they gave me a list of sites to try:

www.grilllovers.com
www.thegadgetsource.com
www.alliedkenco.com
www.chefsresource.com
www.everythinghome.com

My problem is that 3 of the five do not appear to ship to Canada.
Another one gives Canada as an option in the 'Country" pull down menu
but then doesn't give me a place to specify a province -- that doesn't
fill me with confidence.

I was really hoping to me able to pick one up when we were in the States
just to avoid the whole hassle of shipping across the border and the
potential for additional fees above and beyond normal shipping. (Not to
mention Customs gets nervous around boxes that contain things with wires
and timers!) :-)

Did you google this newsgroup about this piece of equipment? IIRC it's not
very reliable? I may be thinking of a different multi-probe remote
themometer, but you might want to double check at any rate. It does look
like it has great features.

You're thinking of the polder dual probe monstrosity. That's the
one with the astoundingly high failure rate. As in class
action suit bad.

From what I've heard, the biggest weakness of the maverick et-73
is a badly placed screw, which has to be removed to turn it on/off..?
If that's incorrect somebody please chime in.

I haven't had a problem turning the Maverick on and off.
The remote unit is easy to switch on and off and the
syncronization procedure is easy.

The base unit has an "OFF/ON/STANDBY" switch, in standby
mode the time of day clock is kept alive, if you switch it
off, the time is lost. The problem is, it's fairly easy
to over-shoot "ON" from "STANDBY" and turn the unit off...
you just have to be careful.

Otherwise, I'm quite happy with the unit. Temp probes
were with +/- 2 degrees F in both ice water and boiling
water.

*thank you* Dana, I've been trying to get the lowdown on this for
a while.

So there's no screw in the way anywhere? Maybe they were referring
to the battery plate, or perhaps the design has been updated since
I heard it.

In any case, I'm gettin' one. Thanks dude.

My pleasure. I've only had it for a month or so, but it's worked
as expected each time. I lay one probe on the grate and stick
the other into the meat and monitor both temps. What I do miss
is the ability to set an alarm when a probe is *too low* ;-)

Sure - would you like me to send you a photo offline of the units?

In any case, I'm gettin' one. Thanks dude.

My pleasure - enjoy! I hope you're as happy with yours as I am
with mine. Too bad Overstock.com is out of them at $40 :-( I wonder
if they'll get more later on?

Fortunately this one of those items that's such a timesaver that I'm
not all that price sensitive. My order's in. Thanks again.

I've posted some scathing stuff about the ET-7 which was about 2 models
back. Total POS. Absolute waste. Would've done better wipin' my hiny
with 3 $20 bills wadded together. We live, we get ripped off, and we
learn.
I've heard of either 72s or 73s that had bad transceivers and were
recalled/had problems/were POSes too.

It is when you come from north of there.

Point well taken, Monroe. I'm going to do just that.

I think the maverick brand gets enhanced fairly frequently so I'm
hoping it will do better than the older models. Another interesting piece
of trivia: I read on another forum that they are currently working on
new firmware to enhance the transmission quality and extend the
usable distance. Supposedly this will be available late this year
or early next year.

Does this mean there is no low limit alarm on the smoker probe? I
read the manual and it seems this is not the case (there is a low
alarm). Can you elaborate.

Thanks,
RZ
