Default vertical smoker why ?

What does a vertical smoker have over a horizontal ? Does the height
matter on the vertical ? What features must the vertical smoker have ?

If you mean a "bullet" smoker with water pan ... typically more efficient,
easier to maintain temperature, and assuming it's a Weber Smokey Mountain
even more so on both counts.

Horizontal offset smokers offer more space and more opportunity to bond with
your equipment while the Weber Smokey Mountain owners are sleeping. Also
they are more manly, since apparently it's manly to not sleep.

Heheh, good one.

What features must the vertical smoker have ?

Uprightness, a certain non-horizontalness?

They take up less space and use less fuel.

So an upright is more efficient . What about height ? Typically i see 52
- 55" high vertical smoker.

They also look like dinosaur suppositories. Why you asking questions that
you have answers for anyway?

Talk about being King of the tailgater cooks with that baby.

As for verts. There's different sizes, Mecco makes a pretty short one, it's
a POS too, El Cheapo Brinkman, or the gold standard WSM, which is also the
tallest I think.

Where you tailgate?

Ohio state . The big downer is that I would have to figure out how to
get it up here without make a special trip to TX . I probably won't use
if for tailgate too much . I'm looking at spending quite of bit of time
in N.C . From reading their web page I could configure it to the way I
want. I would like to have a vertical smoker that I can remove anytime I
want to , and use the rest when room is a issue . Plus use if for the
house. I have big green egg right now.

The only thing any pit needs is the ability to maintain a constant temp of
220-250° and to create some smoke. Beyond that, the rest is convenience:

- how long it will run unattended
- how much space
- can you use it in cold weather
- fuel options (charcoal, wood, gas, electricity)
- option to grill
- appearance
- durability (will it rust out if left outdoors)
- price

Some bullet smokers do pretty well on many of these criteria.
