Hi and a big WELCOME to AFB. :-) In order to get a flavor of what this
newsgroup spends most of its time talking about, please read the FAQ which
is located at:
http://www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/faq2/toc.html

It is the best single-source document on traditional barbecue that I've yet
to see. And that's what this NG is primarily focused on... traditional
methods of BBQ.

Most of us also use gas grills -- I myself use a Weber Genesis
from time-to-time -- so grilling and other forms of outdoor cooking
are sometimes talked about. It's just not the main focus for most
of us here.

This is a primary hang-out for a lot of hard-core BBQ "purists", and it's
the main theme of this NG. So if you're a griller, and you have a great
recipe for ribs or pork and you think of it as "bbq", don't be surprised or
upset if we attempt to show you the light. :-)

The FAQ will help you understand the differences between grilling and
barbecue, and why we will try to pull gas-grillers toward the light of real
'Q, and why we may use gentle corrections to wrongly-used terminology.
Hopefully this will help you to not get your feathered underwear into a
ruffled knot, because we want you to stay. And you may just decide that you
need to set the gasser aside for hot dogs, hamburgers, and steaks, while
picking up a wood-fired pit to 'Q the stuff dreams are made of.

Best and Warm Regards to y'all. BG

HINT: Trimming the posts to which you respond to, along with bottom /
interleaved posting, is what we all prefer here.

Dave

Thanks Dave, esp for that link. Alot of sites have listed that FAQ as their
own, and I'm glad to know which link I should be using!

I've only been around the group a few weeks, but already I'm eating a whole
lot better =)

Again welcome there Mike. Can you name names of "sites"(? ) that use that
same FAQ? Did you mean newgroups? Anyway, who else is using it if I could
ask.

Thanks

Off the top of my head, http://www.bbq-porch.org (which won't come up now
for me, but my history shows that I read section 5.1 on smokers there), and
I read about pork shoulder at http://www.cbbqa.com/faq/10-1-2.html

I know there were other sites because I started to catch them in google for
being the same thing.

A site I did find useful that was a *not* listing of the a.f.b. faq was
bbq.about.com - which is where I got the rub I used for on my pork shoulder
=)

(btw, the link dave gave is also alot faster =p)

That first one is run by Garry Howard and members of the bbq email list,
one of the original contributors to the FAQ. The original FAQ was not for
this newsgroup, but for the bbq email list that was originated by Rick
Thead. The FAQ predates this newsgroup. A few other sites have legitimate
use of the FAQ, such as the one cited by Dave and Bill Wight. Bill was the
editor that took all of our contributions and made a cohesive readable tome.

Welcome Michael

It's amazing how much I have learned here since January. Thanks to these
folks I have gotten alot better and lost my fear to experiment. Some of my
creations have been pretty bad but that's part of the fun.

Also

Thanks to Dave for making folks feel at home here. I am trying to find a
reason (excuse) to spend the money to come up to your place when it is open.
Don't think the wife will buy "but it's BBQ" as the only reason to fly from
GA.

Your welcome. Tell your wife that we've got the Cascades and The Travel
Channel's number one Christmas themed town in America -- a Bavarian-themed
mountain village named Leavenworth. And you can always swing over to
Seattle and ride up the Space Needle :-)

So Bill did that? I hope he knows how perfect a thing he wrought. I suspect
he's got an idea. And good for him, he deserves every pat on the back he
gets.

Hi Mike. Welcome aboard. Eating good/better through improved BBQing,
smoking and grilling is what it's all about. There's no end to what one can
continue to learn/discover from this ongoing dialogue. Posting pics in
alt.binaries.food is always something to be counted on for commentary.

I have a link to the FAQ on my website:
