Welcome to AFB. To get a flavor of what this newsgroup spends most of its
time talking about, the FAQ is
located at:
http://www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/faq2/toc.html

It is the best single-source document on traditional barbecue that I've yet
to see. And that's what this NG is primarily focused on... traditional
methods of BBQ.

Most of us also use gas grills -- I myself use a Weber
Genesis from time-to-time -- so grilling and other forms of outdoor cooking
are sometimes talked about here. But it's just not the main focus for most
of us. This is a
primary hang-out for a lot of hard-core BBQ "purists", and it's the main
theme of this NG. So if you're a griller, and you have a great recipe for
ribs or pork and you think of it as "bbq", don't be surprised or upset if we
attempt to show you the light

The FAQ will help you understand the differences between grilling and
barbecue, and why we will try to pull gas-grillers toward the light of real
'Q, and why we may use gentle corrections to wrongly-used terminology.
Hopefully this will help you to not get your feathered underwear into a
ruffled knot, because we want you to stay. And you may just decide that you
need to set the gasser aside for hot dogs, hamburgers, and steaks, while
picking up a wood-fired pit to 'Q the stuff dreams are made of.

Best and Warm Regards to y'all. BG

Dave

Look at what Bugg has brought to the group in terms of relevance versus
what CALooney has brought. Bugg writes coherently, whereas CALooney
can't put the proper apostrophe in 'sheep's'.
Gee, mebbe I should killfile Dave instead?

How would you know what I have contributed since you have killfiled me?
Seems to me that any direct and useful content would have been missed by
you.

Sorry Cal,

I over reacted. I apologize for the strong language.

I, after re-reading your post many times, can see how you could have written
that without malice. I saw a malicious attack to a trusted AFB regular who
was just saying hello to newbies.

However, I did killfile you and haven't learned yet how to unkillfile you.

BTW: I've learned around here that, unless you have something particularly
witty or a very cogent question to say or ask....you learn a lot more by
listening to these guys than questioning their spelling or netiquette. It
also helps to give Attaboys and Congrats to newbies. Good karma works
wonders.

Off to buy Butts,

I haven't attacked Bugg that way yet (now Monroe and Dale the very unfunny
court jesters...another story). He actually contributes. They on the
otherhand just try to start shit. Like every newsgroup out there, there is
the BigShot (dave) and the asskissers.

i have lurked here, mainly, and posted about my beloved sandlapper mustard
sauce and bay area BBQ and Monroe, while caustic, was on topic and quite
funny in his withering ripostes...

i have also plucked many delightful off-topic items from this NG... Armin
Meiwes, that German cannibal, was introduced to me via a BBQ subject line
and i found that deeply humorous

the only weird thing is the vegetarian polemics

I count on on-topic, potentially useful post after the first GAS
GRILLS MAKE BBQ POST. Unfortunately, it was prefaced by a disclaimer
along the lines of "Okay, you're a bunch of assholes, but in spite of
that fact I'm going to say something about Q."

I seem to recall others coming into AFB with similar attitudes,
meeting with similar results, and then figuring it out. What they did
was say, "Sorry. I'll go out and come back in again, so we can start
over."

That's a hint, CAL.

Oops. I just realized that I was contributing to the acrimony that has
settled over this thread, which really should be a sincere welcome to
newbies to AFB. Sorry, Dave. I'll try not to stomp all over your
welcome message, knowing that it would be more effective if it didn't
thread-drift into flamage.

Kind of sends mixed signals, doesn't it?

Kevin, let me plainy state this then.

Gasgrills can make good bbq. Not the best but good bbq.

There won't be any I'm sorrys because all the initial responses to that
very cordial message were rather assumptive.

I realize that the newsgroup has been commandeered by a bunch of Kamado
fanatics but fanatics but the truth is, the is about bbq, not clay pots.
Quick synopsis of the attitude here. If you are new to the newsgroup,
you are new to bbq. Well that is just plain wrong. Just because you (pl)
have not been able to produce good q using gas doesn't mean others
cannot.

I dumped my Kill-file last night. I do that periodically because it's
usually not needed after a while. You're still here, Cal. Good. Let's you
and I start over; Hi, welcome to AFB.

Gasgrills can make good bbq. Not the best but good bbq.

I agree. IMHO, not as good as a regular pit, but adequate for those who want
to take on the task.

There won't be any I'm sorrys because all the initial responses to
that very cordial message were rather assumptive.

Fine. It's too bad you won't acknowledge the fact that others are not
responsible for *your* actions. You alone are responsible for how you act.
For my part, I apologize for any hostility. I don't, however, apologize for
my opinions.

I realize that the newsgroup has been commandeered by a bunch of
Kamado fanatics but fanatics but the truth is, the is about bbq, not
clay pots.

Just an fyi. Most of us potteryheads have a long history with a lot of
different grills and pits. I myself have used everything from gas grills to
converted freezers to 55 gallon drums to an ECB to a pretty nice off-set to
a WSM before arriving at my Kamado. Kamado, for me, is the easiest to use.
It doesn't produce the *best* 'Q, it produces 'Q that is as good as anyone
elses pit, and far easier than anything else I've used.

Quick synopsis of the attitude here. If you are new to the
newsgroup, you are new to bbq.

I disagree, but objection noted. In my viewpoint, if you are new to the
newsgroup, you are new to this specific newsgroup community. Lots of
experienced bbq'rs have come in, looked around and have contributed good
information. However, a lot of high-heat, direct-cooking hot dog
jockeys --grillers -- have an ill defined notion of what bbq is.

Well that is just plain wrong. Just
because you (pl) have not been able to produce good q using gas
doesn't mean others cannot.

Fine, that's one opinion. Hopefully, this can be put to rest and this
contentious issue will lay to rest.
Dave
