Default Buying a BBQ where "BBQ" = "Grilling"

Back in 2001, I was training down in Pensacola, Florida for a few
months and was introduced to BBQ, catfish and sweet tea. To make
matters worse, I followed that up with a trip to San Antonio and
really became addicted.

The problem is that I live up in Winnipeg. Now, I can make the sweet
tea and the local grocery store sells catfish...but the words "BBQ"
and "grilling" mean the same thing around here. (Savages...)

I've been shopping around for a smoker and the selection isn't all
that great. They all appear to be New Branfels sold under the
Char-Broil label:

Char-Broil (New Branfels) Sierra Smoker $269.99 Cdn
Deluxe Smoker (New Branfels American Gourmet) $149.99 Cdn
Charcoal H2O Smoker (the red one) $89.99 Cdn

The prices aren't all that great, but it's a seller's market. The
same goes for the fuel. Not too many places around here seem to sell
lump.

I'm not looking for a huge surface area...something that can smoke
ribs, chicken and maybe a half to full brisket for some guests. I
also have to be concerned about the size, as I'm in the military and
have to move around very few years.

Any suggestions?

Is the WSM too big for you? You should be able to get it from amazon.com.

I would order the Weber Smokey Mountain through the Virtual Bullet
website... it links to Amazon, but the good folks at VB get a small
percentage of the order. It doesn't cost you any more, but it helps support
a great resource.

I thought Amazon wouldn't ship the WSM to Canada. I seem to recall that
when I looked at ordering one through their website. Someone correct me?

I wasn't aware of that. If that's true, I promise for the useless
intrusion :-).

Just for laughs, I added one to a shopping cart on Amazon and tried to
have it shipped here to Calgary. I got the following error:

*** We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected
destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the
item from your order by changing its quantity to 0 and clicking the
update button below. ***

I also checked amazon.ca and items like BBQs aren't even listed, which
really sucks because the Amazon price is really good, even after the
currency exchange. I had to pay $279 CDN for mine. cry

You've gotten great advice. A WSM is a fine machine and reasonably
portable. I hope you'll be able to get one, whatever it takes.

Try this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=2391805 534
&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V

It's on Ebay, butthey say they ship worldwide.

snip some more here also

You didn't say who's military. If you're U.S. that's one thing. If you're
canadian that's another which I don't know anything about. The U.S.
provides training facilities for many countries including middle eastern
countries. If you're U.S. military, log on to:
http://www.thor.aafes.com/ and follow your nose to "Outdoor Living".
There is a limited selection of smokers there that will be neatly shipped
to your local at your bidding.
If in fact you are limited to shopping on the Canadian market, I have no
further advise. I have no knowledge of the Canadian military other then
that if you are angry, you don't want to fight a Canadian because he's
doing it for the fun. And after the fight, he's likely to buy you a beer
regardless of who won. And if you're an American G.I., you're gonna
still be ****ed and won't appreciate the irony of it all.

I appreciate all of the help I'm receiving in trying to realize my BBQ
dreams!

It looks like the WSM has a lot of afb. I'm going to have a look
around the city for one, but as I said...it's slim pick'ins north of
the border. A few places sell Weber grills, but I've never seen the
WSM on the shelves. Honestly, I think the wife would probably be
easier to convince towards a non-grill shapped BBQ device. I can hear
it now...why do we need that when we already have a BBQ? (She's never
experience BBQ.)

I do have the option of heading down to Fargo...my problem then
becomes trying to fit the smoker into the back of an Alero. Will it
fit?

Canadian military (Bioscience Officer)...had a "taste" of the US life
down in Pensacola and it was eye opening: PX, Commissary, military
discounts at movie theatres, restaurants, Disney World...sigh.

And yes...we do excel in our beer buying abilities.

The WSM isn't all that big. You can probably lay the box across the
back seat of your Alero.

IIRC, isn't Grand Forks north of Fargo? You might score a WSM there.

The WSM comes apart in three main pieces. I've carried it easily in the
back of my station wagon. I would guess that you'd be able to fit the
pieces in somehow.
