While awaiting my order of Kamado lump, I have been trying several of the
brands of lump available in the area.
I picked up a bag of Cowboy lump at Lowes and gave it a try yesterday. Much to
my surprise, after lighting, it gave off a "petroleum" odor (pretty strong,
too).
I didn't use any starter fluid...just my torch.

Needless to say, I won't try that stuff again !

Anyone else have a similar experience ?

Yep. The first bag of that stuff I bought was just fine. But the
next 3 bags were pure crap. The USDA/FDA really needs to check
out this stuff and see if it's really safe or not. I wonder if
charcoal is even in the scope of any of these agencies?

Does anybody here still endorse this stuff? I think I was one of
its first detractors here, going against the grain of popular
opinion, but I've noticed others seem to be coming to their own
conclusions as well.

Does this come up in other BBQ forums as well?

I haven't used any Cowboy in a long time and only then because it
was all I could find. For a long time now, I've been using Royal Oak
in various named bags, but all direct from the factory in Ocala, FL.
The Cowboy that I used sparked pretty bad, but did not smell bad.
All of it appeared to be scraps from hardwood flooring production.
To be fair, this Royal Oak spits some when you dump the chimney
into your pit, but other then that I have no complaints. No smell
problems in the last hundred pounds or so. I use raw oak and or
orange (logs) for smoke. No foil and no soaking.

Cowboy was the first lump I tried...didn't notice an off odor, just didn't
like it...sparked alot, and all broken up. I drive 10 more miles to buy a
differant brand, and get more bags at a time....

All I've been able to try locally (besides the Cowboy) is Chef Wagon, Real
Flavor,(both from Wal-Mart) and Big Green Egg.
The BGE is definitely the winner out of that bunch, even though it always has a
couple of rocks in the bag.

I have been using Peoples Woods brand called Nature's Own for years. I
tried cowboy and it burned fast, out-of-control and I actually saw furniture
pieces from a draw in it.

I haven't found anything else that is better in the Northeast.

Hey Fos,

That's kinda wierd...they must be using a new formula this time around. Mine
took forever to just get to 350. I wonder how long it would have taken if they
hadn't put all those chemicals in !
