While you are in Winston, you are only 20 minutes from Lexington NC, home of
the famous Lexington #1. Well worth the drive.

That reminds me, time to go visit my Dad in Winston, with an obvious side
trip

I WOULD say my house guys but, I don't have much time for queing of
late.
Otherwise, in Lexington...Lexington #1 or the Barbecue Center. Now
that SIMO's in Winston is closed I don't know of many good places left
out that way.
There are a few on Highway 66 just north of I-40 in Kernersville that
I've heard are decent. Though I have not been in to verfiy..yet.

Simo's is closed? Oh, the horror. Ribs and a tall Bud were one of my
favorite meals when I lived there.

How about Bell Brothers, are they still open? Dixie Pig?

Alrighty then...

After reviewing the responses and doing a little bit of research, I've
come up with the following itinerary:

SAT 4/24: Arrive Charlotte 7:00 PM, get rental car, drive to
Winston-Salem to visit Sis In-law and family. On the way, stop at
LEXINGTON BARBECUE #1 for dinner.

MON 4/26: Drive back to Charlotte to pick up colleague at airport.
On the way, Stop at BARBECUE CENTER for Lunch.

TUE 4/27: Drive back up to Lexington with colleague and try SPEEDY'S
for Dinner.

THU 4/29: After work conference ends, drive to Raleigh to visit
Father-in-law.

FRI 4/30: Drive from Raleigh to Woodbine, GA to visit Dad. On the
way, stop in Savannah for sightseeing.

SAT 5/1: Drive with my Dad down to BIG JIM's in McIntosh, FL for
Lunch.

SUN 5/2: Fly back home.

So, anything along that route that I'm missing?

Any suggestions for SAVANNAH, GA?

TIA,

Chef, I haven't been to Lexington since 1998, but at the time I tried
Lexington #1, Speedy's, John Wayne's, Stamey's, Jimmy's, and Southern.
(See http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~thc/bbqtour/lexington.html)

My wife and I agreed that of the six, Jimmy's was unquestionably the
best, and we both rated Speedy's as #5 of the six. I can understand
that you gotta try Lexington #1 (even though I thought that John
Wayne's and Stamey's were better), but I *strongly* suggest trying
Jimmy's, even if it means bypassing Speedy's.

Of course, you could do like we did: a sandwich at Jimmy's at 10:00
AM, a sandwich at Southern at 10:30 AM, a sandwich at Stamey's at
11:15 AM, and splitting a sandwich (c'mon, you can't blame us) at
Lexington #1 at noon. (And, no, that's not why I didn't like
Lexington #1 as much...I'd already had dinner there the night before,
so my judgment was unimpaired by previous Q that day.)

Interestingly, we picked up on a Jimmy's-Speedy's axis...those who
liked one tended not to like the other.

Now...I'm gonna be in your neck of the woods in late May. I found
your Richmond suggestions in the a.f.b archives. Any updates you
wanna pass along my way?

Hey Tom,

I actually re-found your site while researching Lexington this week
(I originally found it a few years back while reading up on Carolina
BBQ sauces), and yeah, I saw your ratings, but yours were the only
ones rating Lexington so lowly....Hmmm...Maybe I'll do a quick tour
and grab some plates from a few different spots and try...

Now wait...which woods? I'm in Eugene, OR....don't recall making
Richmond suggestions, but there are a few other 'chefs' out there....

Okay, I'll add Jimmy's to the list at least....

;-)

My wife liked Lexington #1, but we both agreed that Speedy's wasn't in
the top 4 of Lexington. I thought that the quality of Lexington #1
was good, but it just seemed to me that Jimmy's, Stamey's, and John

One other thing you should check out while you're there...see if
the locals call it Honey Monk's instead of Lexington #1.

Now wait...which woods? I'm in Eugene, OR....don't recall making

Brain cramp on my part...I was thinking of Cap'n Ron. My bad, and I
hope that neither you nor Cap'n Ron is offended.

Okay, I'll add Jimmy's to the list at least....

Good move...with the disclaimer that I was there 6 years ago.

Next thing to do is convince you to get to Tuscaloosa and try
Dreamland.

One word of warning about Dreamland...my wife reports that Dreamland
in Birmingham is nowhere near as good as the original in Tuscaloosa.

I'll leave it to Big Jim to compare Mobile to the original.

As long as you have the MillerLite in there, all is good. TFM can't go
