Hi all,

My trusty old Ducane has given me 14 years of service but it is time to
replace it. Got a lot of family visiting next month and I intend to have a
new grill to cook the goods on. I'd love nothing more than a #7 Kamado but
the budget and timeframe just don't allow it. I need to stay $500 or less.

I gotta say I am really tempted by yhe Amazon offer for the Weber Genesis
Gold C for $499 with free shipping. It's hard to find anything bad that
people say about this grill...yes, it's a safe choice, but it's also a
quality one. And from what I hear with the good low temp control I can even
do some smoking. Yes, the rotis and a cover will add a bit more but I think
I could spring for that.

Other options are the Nexgrill at Target and the Costco Char-Broil Front
Avenue. The latter at $389 including cover and rotis seems like a great
value, but I am still leaning toward the Weber Genesis Gold C.

Someone out there convince we one way or another so I can retire the Ducane!

I have a Silver B and have praised it before and will praise it now. There
are many good points to the Webers, one of which is support and availability
of parts from the factory. Not too many grill mfrs still providing
replacement parts for grills well over a decade old but Weber does. I've
had and used a number of gas grills over the years and nothing this side of
$1000 can touch the Weber.

The Amazon Gold C is a good deal but only the Home Depot models have cast
iron porcelanized cooking grates which you'll want if you do many steaks and
like them bloody inside and charred outside. However, you can always buy
just the grates from HomeDepot.com for about $50 and add them to the Amazon
unit later.

Eventually you'll want a dedicated smoker and the Weber Smokey Mountain
("WSM") is excellent if a bit pricey at $150-180. I have one of those,
also.

If you can wait a week Ill have a report for you on the Char-Broil
FrontAvenue. My next door neighbor ignored my sage advise and didnt get the
Weber.
It will be hooked to the natural gas line tomorrow and Im invited over for a
bbq Saturday.
I am sold on Webers personally. Great service and parts when needed. The
Front Ave looks good but boy is it going to be a bear to clean all that
shiny thin SS.But the infrared rotti is a nice add on.

Having been a weber genesis owner for over 10 years the old unit was
seemingly getting tired. Not cooking well scorching or undercooking, needing
constant attention. I kept cleaning the bars, and grease tray to no avail,
and just considered the unit a loss especially since the wooden tables had
rotted away (thanks to my lack of care and never covering it). Anyway I fell
for the shiny stainless route (big shiny sam's unit).
With the new unit on hand I did a few things to the weber (just to
experiment). I tried to get to the bottom of the poor heat/distribution etc.
I took burners out cleaned and blew them out no difference. Long story short
it turned out the grease in the control valves had hardened and clups
started to clog the jets and valve bodies. After disassembling the units and
cleaning with a good compresssed air blow dry I reassembled with new
synthetic moly lube and tried a test cook. It was like new again. So I made
new shelves for it, replaced flavor bars with some custom made to match the
new style units and it blows the big shiny stainless one to the weeds.
The shiny one is useless with a small breeze the weber can cook in a gale,
the cast iron burners corrode and require constant maintenance. On perfect
day with clean burners it will cook almost as well as the weber I'll give it
that. As far as the IR burner I'm not sold on it. I've used it and it works
fine but I miss the point since I end up using the bottom burners to get
some flavor anyway and food spun on the Genesis just plain tastes betetr
also.
Gripes on the Genesis, 1. no cabinet, 2. It's too low. If you're tall you
have to bend over more to work with it, 3. accessories are expensive, 4. You
have to keep an eye on the grease tray or you can ruin a meal without
warning. Otherwise it's as good as you'll get.

got a bigger and better engineered grill for $199.00

Until the hinge plates break and leave you there with a hot grill lid in
your hands. There is a reason weber has withstood the test of time and
competition. Yeah you'll find nice shiny stuff that cheaper but I won't fall
for that crap again.

Or, get a WSM and put the remaining $ in a savings account marked for the Kamado
7 (or 9 or 11)

I've had my eye on a Brinkmann, but my Charbroil CB860 from 1986
refuses to die! Waiting on the ashpan or cooking grates to give out,
then its come home to papa!

I've been looking at Brinkmann's for a while too....

Like I said I know the Weber is a safe choice...but the combination of
features and price/value make the Costco grill awfully tempting especially
in a budget crisis.

I went to buy the Brinkmann but bought the Coleman
for $269.00. I cooked on it tonight and had excellent results.
Just as good as a Webber and much bigger for less.
