Default Danish Spares at Albertsons for $1.49/pound

I wanted to do some ribs today, but didn't have any on hand. Walked
over to the co-op and they had some all-natural babybacks for
$4.99/pound. They were so small that it would've taken three $6.00
packages to even make it worthwhile, so I went to Albertsons. They had
some unadulterated St. Louis spares for $3.49/pound. Just as I was
grabbing a couple racks, I spotted a box labeled Danish Spareribs,
$1.49/pound.

That was the only box in the fresh display case, so I asked the
butcher if they had any more. They did, in the frozen-foods case with
the turkeys. I bought three boxes.

I bought some last year at Save Mart for $0.99/lb. Must have been some real
skinny pigs. No meat on the bones.

Then they were all frozen together in the box. And a little freezer burned.

Good luck. I won't be buying anymore. Not when you can get good one's at
Sam's and Costco for $1.99 (Cal.)

I've heard mixed results about these lately.

I bought them once about 7 years ago and they were fine. All
frozen together and a royal PITA to separate just a few racks at a
time. But they were fairly meaty and pretty good for $.89/lb.

Each rack of these is packed in a plastic sleeve. The box I was
cooking from yesterday was already thawed.

Had some at a friends a few months ago again they were fine, kinda
small and more bone than normal, but still OK.

These were pretty meaty, and came out quite tender. I thought I
detected a faint aftertaste of ammonia or something similar, but my
wife said I was imagining things.

I bought a box of these at Safeway about two years ago, cooked two
racks, then threw out the rest of the box. I think they get these from
a different species of hogs. -RP
