Looking for restaurant recommendations in St. Louis.
Q or otherwise
Moderate to inexpensive (small budget this trip)
Needn't be fancy (obviously from above), a great burger joint would do
Strong preference for downtown
Within 1 mile of line from Arch to Busch Stadium to Union Station
Otherwise easily accessible via mass transit (light rail)

Searching for decent food at a decent price and perhaps a "uniquely St.
Louis" ambience (popular with locals and perhaps ignored by tourists).

Thanks

I don't eat downtown much, so I won't recommend anything there. One good
spot for basic food is O'Connell's pub, at Kingshighway and I-44. Good
roast beef sandwiches, burgers, and a daily special.

Another good burger place and a fun atmosphere (but even farther from
downtown) is Blueberry Hill on Delmar in the U-City loop.

As far as BBQ, I hear some pretty good things about Super Smokers, the
guys have won competitions in Memphis. However, that doesn't necessarily
translate to superior restaurant fare, and I haven't tried it.

The downtown stores seem to be specialty stands for game events, so you
probably would have to go afield.

Bandanna's is a chain, and so-so at best. You can find them listed at
http://whitepages.com

The best stuff is likely to be found in obscure parts of town. I used to
patronize a stand in Pine Lawn on Natural Bridge Rd. Really, I've pretty
much just done my own for the past several years.

I would second O'Connells-- good place, food and fun all around.

Another Pub that would be quite a bit closer would be McGurk's at 12th and
Russell (1200 Russell is the actual address). It would be just as good as
O'Connells. If you like a good pint of Guinness go to McGurks-- not that you
could not get it at O'Connells.

Blueberry Hill is a lot of fun and has really good bar food.

My other recommendation would be Cunetto's. It is in the Italian
neighborhood known as "The Hill". Directions would be easy-- everyone in
the hotel industry knows this place.

In terms of Barbecue-- avoid Bandanas in favor of Super Smokers (several
locations). I ate at the location in St. Charles and was surprised that it
was a good bit like the barbecue served here in Memphis. Nice shoulder
sandwich with good texture, decent smoke and very flavorful.

Go to Ted Drewes for Ice Cream ( a St. Louis institution). Get directions
from absolutely anyone. It is actually frozen custard, but it is the best
ice cream in the world.

Good Luck,

Matthew Brown

If Mark's is still around I'd go there for a burger. It's not fine dining. In a
word, it's a dump and you'll come out smelling like grease.

However, the burgers are great & huge. They use a wad of beef about the size of
a softball, squish it flat and cook it on a griddle. Don't recall the cross
street it's on but it's a 1/2 block off the 2000 block of Olive.

For very good Italian at a decent price try Charlie Gitto's (sp?).

Both are easily within a mile of the Arch.

That's where Tommy Lasorda used to eat all time when the Dodgers were in
town.

I used to hurt myself on the linguine in red clam sauce.

STOP THAT. Immediately. I just ate and shouldn't be hungry.

For BBQ in the STL area, come out to O'Fallon IL. About 23 miles
after you cross the MS River. Go to Super Smokers. There are Super
Smokers on the MO side of the river, but I haven't been to any of
those, so I can't speak about them. I would assume they're just as
good as the one in O'Fallon, IL. The Q is outstanding. Big Mama's
and Pig 'n' Poke are good on the IL side also, along with Red's Rib
Shack.

As far as chains go, I do like the Smokey Bones here in the Metro
East, and the KC Masterpiece on N. Lindburgh in STL is very good also.

Searching for decent food at a decent price and perhaps a "uniquely St.
Louis" ambience (popular with locals and perhaps ignored by tourists).

Three days, three meals. Capsule reviews follow.

1) Blueberry Hill. Best ambience, bar none. Great eclectic collections of
pop memorabilia everywhere. Food was very good. Bonus: in the middle of a
three+ block "walk of fame" with stars and plaques commemorating St. Louis
notables from a wide variety of disciplines; sports, music, politics, etc.

2) Culpepper's. This one picked by a local acquaintance. Typical pub just
off-campus from SLU. Terrific cajun chicken sandwich. Generous salads.

3) O'Connell's. Also good for ambience. One of those dark bars where you
are blinded when you return to the daylight world. Food was quite good;
nice roast beef sandwich. Best value for the dollar.

Dessert recommendation: The Fudgery in Union Station. The fudge is good, if
a bit expensive. The show is great fun.

Thanks to all who replied.

Yeah, the U City loop is a lot of fun, plenty of interesting memorabilia
at the Hill.

Haven't been there.

Roast beef is good, as long as they have rare available. The Thursday
special, roast pork loin sandwich with gravy is terrific.
