"on their way..."!? Hell, they've been going outta sight for the last
couple years. I won't even consider buying beef unless it's on sale
for at least half price. No problem. We gots lotsa oriental
supermarkets with awesome pork cuts at dirt cheap prices.

I've considered beef prices up for the last year or so. My beef
purchases have been less and less. Buying more pork lately.

Could this be due to the Adkin Diet ;-)

As a matter of fact, one article I read did attribute some of the rise
in prices to the popularity of the Atkins diet and the South Beach
diet. It also mentioned the restrictions on imported beef from Canada.

So, in part, blame Canada.

In part!?! I blame Canada entirely! I firmly believe that Harry D. and
Dave in BC conjurred up this whole Mad Cow hoax as a way of keeping their
beef to themselves. Selfish *******s.

Oops, time to take my medication.

They have risen rapidly here for the past few years. I no longer buy
any meats at typical supermarkets and instead buy from local butchers or
possibly Costco. Their prices have gone up as well but still better
meats and cheaper than the supermarkets.

As a matter of fact, one article I read did attribute some of the rise
in prices to the popularity of the Atkins diet and the South Beach
diet. It also mentioned the restrictions on imported beef from Canada.

People are under the mistaken impression that the Atkins Diet is a
"high protein diet." It is not. It is a high fat, high fiber,
adequate protein diet. Atkins does not suggest increasing protein
consumption beyond what the body naturally craves, say, 15-30% of
calories (it varies widely). That leaves another 70-85% of calories
that must come from one of the only three other sources, those being
carbs, fats and alcohols. Since carbs are severely restricted, often
to 5%, that leaves alcohols) both ethanol and what are called "sugar
alcohols," such as maltitol, sorbitol, etc.) and fats. Now, I'm
pretty much of a lush, but how many calories from ethanol are
acceptable? and the sugar alcohols cause a lot of people severe
digestive upset. That leaves fat. Yes, the Atkins diet is about
getting at least 50-75% of your daily calories from fat. The only
fats resticted on Atkins are the artificial trans-fats, which means
margarine and vegetable shortening. They put that crap in all kinds
of processed carby snacks, which we Atkins people eschew anyway. It is
listed as "partially hydrogenated _______ oil." Read the labels.
That shit is all over the place.

The thing I miss most is BBQ sauce, especially Maull's BBQ Sauce (I'm
from StL), but guess what? I DO get to have BBQ occasionally because
I have reached and maintained my target weight for many months. BBQ
sauce is a treat, not a staple, and since I almost never touch bread
or potatoes or anything like that, I can afford to go on a carb
holiday occasionally and when I do, I do it up big. I have BBQ with
sauce, corn on the cob, and real beer (not Mich Ultra or Miller Lite,
but heavy microbrews), all ordinarily prohibited on Atkins. I went
from 198 down to 163 in six months! All that while eating corned
beef, smoked chicken leg quarters, butter, eggs, cheese, avocadoes,
fish, nuts (lots of nuts), and boatloads of green veggies. I gave up
beer completely the first six months (switched to vodka+artificially
sweetened lemon or lime ade, squeezed fresh), and since then I
typically only drink the low-carb beers.
I've always been on the high side as far as protein, as I suspect most
of the people on this NG are, and I tell you that you can eat just as
much meat as ever and if you give up the chips and potato salad and
bread, you can get rid of that gut.

That's the story on low carb from a guy who used to post to this NG a
few years ago. Hey, to anyone who remembers me, The Bonobos are
FINALLY putting out a single. 7" vinyl, and it should be out but the
end of the year. Better late than never.

So, in part, blame Canada.

It isn't Canada's fault that one of their cows got mad cow
