I've managed to get around the problem by setting the MTU to a value of 1492 but for some reason I think this has slowed things down a bit, not a big deal on cable but one likes to enjoy the speed of cable to the fullest... Anything else you can think of to check? I'm not sure what MTU my isp uses but it doesn't seem to lockup while surfing, just when I enter the binary groups.....maybe its a G rated router...LOL Anyway to check my isp setting without talking to more tech support....ARGGGHHHHHHHHHH Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. An interesting question, and not a situation I've run into before. I'll ask a friend who has much more experience with routers that I do; maybe he can come up with something. Your systems specs sound right; the first thing I thought of was not enough RAM, but 256 megs should be more than enough. Have you tried downloading any large files besides just pics? Anything like any larger program demos? If so, do you have the same problem, or is this only happening with pics off newsgroups? Need a place to test if it's just newsgroups? Try he http://www.pippina.com/photo.html and try the F-117 file. It's a 750 KB .wmv file, and should tell you if it's a problem with your newsgroup server or the router. -- Bill Replace "g" with "a" Experience is what you get when you expected something else. |

Dave,
When you talked w/ the Tech Support folks did they have you check the version of firmware in the router? A quick check of the Linksys site shows a versions 1.45.7 with a "readme" containing: Linksys- A division of Cisco Systems, Inc. Firmware Date : July 31, 2003 Current Firmware : Version 1.45.7 Product PartNo : BEFSR41 ver. 1 & ver. 2.x/BEFSR11/BEFSRU31 Release Notes ---------------------- Below is a list of enhancements made on the Router's firmware version 1.45.7: 1.Supports multi-L2TP-pass-through 2.Supports DHCP relay agent 3.Fixed fragmented packets arriving out of order. I suggest you go he http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=3 and download the latest firmware to patch your unit. Item 3 "could" be the source of your problem, especially if dropping MTU (which decreases the maximum packet size) fixed the problem. No guarantees but certainly worth the effort. If your running a "version 3.x" unit then there is no firmware update available. I hope this helps some. Hi, Try going to BroadbandReports.com and running their Tweak Test: http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweaks Then download the DrTCP tool off their site and tweak your adapter's settings to the suggestions from the tool. Do you have firewall software installed? Maybe it's set to block fragmented packets. -- Aloha, Nathan Lau San Jose, CA #include std.disclaimer |
