Default cast iron grate for a weber kettle

Surely I'm not the first person to wonder how sweet it would be to have a
heavy cast iron grill grate in a standard Weber kettle, instead of the
stock, light-weight stainless steel grate that has zero heat capacity.
Unfortunately, I haven't found much information on it other than Weber
itself doesn't make one. Has anyone found any 3rd party companies that do?
Can a reasonably decent metal-working shop fabricate one (at a reasonable
expense)? A Weber kettle with a cast iron grate would truly be the perfect
grill...

Cheers,
Terry

My Weber Performer came with cast iron grates. They rust and rust and rust!
It's quite a pain. It's almost impossible to clean and oil a cast iron grate
after each use and at some point they rust. I use the plain old steel grate
with the hinges $18.00 at BBQ Galore. The direct heat from charcoal is hot
to the point where I wonder what benefit you would get, other than using
less charcoal.

My Weber Q-200 has a cast iron grate and I've never had a problem with
rust. Cleaning is simple, I lift it out, and pressure wash it on both
sides (no soap). Then return it to the grill to dry quickly under heat,
and spray a light coating of PAM on it.

Weber used to make a cast-iron grate for the kettle. It was a modified
nickel grate that you could drop a cast iron or porcelain-coated cast iron
grate into. It was discontinued about two years ago, but it seems an easy
mod to replicate this by modifying a nickel grate and using a replacement
PCI grate.

I have a nice one made by Lodge. It is heavy cast iron, machined smooth.
It can hold a LOT of heat.

Google on Lodge LBBG3. Amazon has them.
