Why do you need to spray it with Pam? The newspaper will start the
charcoal
without any help as long as you don't wad it in there too tight.

Well, I guess either my posts aren't getting out or I've been
"blacklisted" on the group for reasons I don't understand. As I asked
the same question a while earlier. It's been happening a lot lately so
I'll assume it's option "B".

If someone can explain what I did to apparently get plonked by so many,
I'd appreciate it. Honestly.

You're coming in here loud and clear Steve.

I actually cheat - my chargriller duo has a side burner. 5 minutes on
that and it's flaming to go!
Dump that into the side firebox, another load on top of that, and in
30 minutes I have enough smoke
to set off an alarm.

I don't know. I've been throwing them into the recycle bin. I'll try it next

time since I'm all out of parafin sticks.

my only complaint is that paper turns to charred little flakes of
embers and fly everywhere.

It helps the newspaper burn slower.

I would think that it makes the newspaper burn hotter, as well as
longer. I've stopped using newspaper, myself. Wax paper is the way to
go! Just make a big wad and put it under your charcoal chimney, light
it, and go about your business. In 15 minutes, you've got fire. Easy,
cheap, burns clean, and leaves very little ash.

Good on ya Skeeter, but newspaper without the Pam is even cheaper.
And for us dedicated cheapskates a onetime investment in an oil
spritzer (I use a 'Misto') loaded with Canola oil obviates the need
for any expensive Pam. (Pam 'regular' is Canola oil).

I don't have newspaper available anymore, so I use other means. The

I work double duty. After the grill heats up, I was spraying canola oil
on a
cloth, then using it to lube the racks. (As taught by Alton Brown)

Now I oil up a wad of paper towels, lube the racks, and then stuff the
oily paper into the chimney, to be used next time to light the charcoal.

Of course I always take off the body and lid of the R2D2 before

You might give it a whirl. There is a definite taste difference,

No, there isn't. I used to use a chimney, and often use it at work
and school (where we have bigger smokers for groups), and there is
NO taste of lighter fluid.

People who use a lot of lighter fluid, squirt down the sides and
bottom of their smoker/firepan, and don't let it burn off completely
and vented may have this problem, but I sure don't.

I dump Jack Daniels on the lump (and paper) before starting the chimney.

I used to do the oiled paper towel from preping the grill, but I too
now have the side burner on the CharGriller and it works perfectly.

I set my chimney on the bottom grate in the firebox, add the crumpled
paper, then lump, douse with JD and light at the bottom. The only sparks
are from lump dust. They never fly more than a foot or so, if that.

Sounds like alcohol abuse, if you ask me.

I dump a little Jack Daniels down the barbequer before starting the chimney
and use vegatable oil on the newspaper. Just sayin'.

My kid brother was a loyal JD fan for years. I finally convinced him to try
a _real_ Bourbon. He's been on Wild Turkey ever since! Just sayin'. ;-)
