Hey guys, I don't post here much anymore, but what's with all the spam?
Anyway, I developed a recipe for chicken that mimics what I used to
get in some of the chicken shacks in NC years ago. Thought I'd share. -RP

Filter on " and it will get rid of 90%. If you have the
capability of filtering out the entire googlegroups domain, all the better.
I can't, and I won't change from using OE, so the @gmail works well.

Looks like Randy is using Thunderbird. As I recall, its filtering is
relatively primitive, along the lines of OE. I think (but couldn't
swear) that Subject or Sender is about it.

I'm still doing pretty well with just a keyword filter for the subject
line. Every now and then I have to add one, but it's working out pretty
well without having to blanket kill any domains.

I use TB and filtering isn't too bad, you can do things like "If sender
contains" "whatever" then "mark message read" or "If Subject contains"
"whatever" then "mark message read"

Thanks Dave, man it has been a while since I've been here. You were
just opening the barbecue place when I hung out here. If I could have
gotten better flights,I'd have been part of that wedding party. Hope
all is well. -RP

Yeah, that will take of a lot of the problem. When I was picking out a
newsreader some time back I looked carefully at the filtering. At the
time, I was more interested in the cross-posting trolls (or I should
say LESS intersted in them) so I wanted to be able to do some filtering
on newsgroups.

Hey, sorry if I was a bit grumpy yesterday. The spam thing is a boil on
the ass of usenet.

I agree, TB is DEFIANTLY lacking in filtering crossposts but all in all
it's workable.

Thanks, no sweat. We all get our knickers twisted from time to time.
I've certainly done it. I think we all try not to but sometimes it just
doesn't work. Fagitaboudit. ;-)

So this post is invisible to most, I guess. That sucks - I'm not keen
on paying for Usenet access but I guess I'd better pony up if I want
Dave to read my posts. That's on top of the distinct disadvantage of
no filters whatsoever that I get with Google - can't really block
anyone or anything.

Well, if you know Dave and don't have a gmail account, just let him
know that I'm not offended and that I won't be blocking everything
from davebbq.com

I just took a look and all those spams are from some watch domain, not
from a gmail domain. I don't see any spam from gmail in recent posts
(unless you are counting my messages). You don't think that Google
filters out gmail accounts on inbound Usenet, do you? And Dave doesn't
care because he can't read my emails. And I felt I had so much to
contribute...

A lot of spammers use a gmail account to access google groups as an nntp
host and then post spam which contains links to other domains... the watch
and shoe domains, for example, or fruadulent chinese designer domains. These
Google accounts are so free, easy and disposable that the perps often don't
even bother to disguise their headers any more. Less frequently they do it
with a yahoo address. But sometimes they will include a real yahoo address
for replies to the spammer. Those you can report and usually get back an
acknowledgement from Yahoo that action was taken against the account.

Some of the spammer domains, especially the blog trolls and non/chinese/shoe
watch spams, resolve as Godaddy hosted domains. Those can be reported at
.

I understand filtering makes life easier but its also important to report
these whenever possible. However don't ever send reports to abuse at
chinanet or similar chinese domains, because they will just sell your
address to spammers, since the majority of their hosting clients are
internet thieves looking to steal from you or con you into sending money for
merchandise that will never arrive.

I missed the OP, but picked it up with the reply.

Jeff, all you need to do is munge your " to something like
"atgeemaledotcom" and those who filter on " won't filter you out.
I don't want to miss ya.

He uses GG. I don't believe it allows munging.

Right you are - I checked the other day. I'm investigating other
routes, as I have always liked Usenet - just never had such a hard
time "getting it". With the nntp firewall blocks at my work and lack
of a web interface from my provider, I guess I'll have to pony up if I
want to get over that hurdle. Still debating - I'm a cheap *******,
especially when it comes to paying for something that I can get for
free, all be it not quite as good.
