I'm investigating other routes, as I have always liked Usenet - just never had such a hard time "getting it". With the nntp firewall blocks at my work and lack of a web interface from my provider, I guess I'll have to pony up if I want to get over that hurdle. Still debating - I'm a cheap *******, especially when it comes to paying for something that I can get for free, all be it not quite as good. --Jeff you don't get email service for free through your ISP? -- Steve |

you don't get email service for free through your ISP? Yeah but... I like to peruse my mail while at work (at lunch, of course), however they block the nntp port to hit my free news server, which is why I fall back on Google Groups. My provider (Wide Open West) doesn't provide a web interface to the groups. --Jeff |

I never really checked. Worth trying though. -- Steve |

I can't, and I won't change from using OE, so the @gmail works well. Dave www.davebbq.com So this post is invisible to most, I guess. That sucks - I'm not keen on paying for Usenet access but I guess I'd better pony up if I want Dave to read my posts. That's on top of the distinct disadvantage of no filters whatsoever that I get with Google - can't really block anyone or anything. Well, if you know Dave and don't have a gmail account, just let him know that I'm not offended and that I won't be blocking everything from davebbq.com ![]() --Jeff Get a free account at Teranews. -- Brick(Youth is wasted on young people) |

Thanks for that lead - I found you can read (not write) via usenet.mail2web.com through a web interface. I'll check out mail2web further to see what else they have. I got an account on TeraNews and found that both the standard and the alternate port to that server is blocked, so that won't work for me. I'll keep playing with it and probably either end up only posting from home or paying for an account somewhere that allows a web interface (such as GigaNews). I have to spend some time with my Xnews users manual as well since it's been a while since I've used newsreader software. Thanks for the info guys, --Jeff |

I understand filtering makes life easier but its also important to report these whenever possible. However don't ever send reports to abuse at chinanet or similar chinese domains, because they will just sell your address to spammers, since the majority of their hosting clients are internet thieves looking to steal from you or con you into sending money for merchandise that will never arrive. MartyB in KC- Someone, somewhere must have actually given these guys a buck once. They are going to keep pounding the usenet until they believe that they won't profit again. Never click on spam, Never talk to telemarketers, Never buy from door to door salesmen, unless you want to encourage them to continue. Cam |

I'm able to check my email with it and READ Usenet with it, but as of yet, I don't see how I can actually post to Usenet with it. I must be missing something if you are able to post. I'll dig more through their site later today/this weekend, but feel free to clue me in if you're willing. And I've really pulled this off topic - so sorry for that. Just to bring things back in line, I do plan to try out that chicken recipe... Thanks, --Jeff |

I thought the problem was you couldn't read your email and send email from work. The link I provided will do that. I don't know if it works with usenet as I don't use it for that purpose. Sorry if I misunderstood. -- Steve |
