Barbecue (alt.food.barbecue) Discuss barbecue and grilling--southern style "low and slow" smoking of ribs, shoulders and briskets, as well as direct heat grilling of everything from burgers to salmon to vegetables.

What remote thermometer do you recommend?

Rather than rely on the themometer in the front of the hood of my Grand
Turbo, I'd like to use a remote thermometer. The hood on the GT doesn't have
a window so I can't use the cheap gauge of stick variety.
I need an SI scale since I'm in Australia and only understand the
temperature measured in Kelvin or Celsius.

So you want a thermometer that tells you that water boils at 373.15° K?

Taylor and Polder make good units that read in Celsius and Fahrenheit. The
Polder is circa $20 and the Taylor is circa $17 here.

Oops, it appears they've gone up since I bought one;

your legs buckled and you hit your head on the back
of the tub and no one found you for hours?

Look for the Maverick ET73 on eBay.....

It's a good unit with two probes - one for the food and one for the chamber
temp. It has low and high alarms, timers and can run in C or F as you wish.

The only downside is a rather quirky design where you have to open the
battery cover on the remote unit to switch it on, however it only take a few
seconds.

You'll probably have to ship it from the US as I've not seen them anywhere
else....(I shipped a case of them to the UK and gave/sold the spares to my
friends)
