Has anyone used an infrared grill? If so, how did you like it. I'm
thinking of upgrading.

Before you drop alot of $$$ on this type of gimmicky equipment realize that
it's purpose is singular. To sear meat nothing more. To turn out great meals
you will need 2 units. Yes the IR will do a decent if not great job on
steaks and chops but nothing else. If you can swing the $$$ than touche' but
if you are a mortal in the $$$ dept. my advice would be to get a good
quality conventional unit such as a weber. You will never go wrong.

The IR grills can be throttled back to some degree, but you are right
about them not being an all-inclusive way to grill. As you state, what
they do best is to sear meat, and they do that very well indeed. I have
my custom built IR grill mounted on a side shelf of my 3-burner SS gas
grill and use them both. For instance, when cooking Monkfish the other
night, I first grilled it to "rare" on the gas grill, which took some
time, and then did 45 seconds per side on the IR grill to add some
"crust." The results were outstanding.

Using just my personal bellweather, the IR grill is a tremendous success
here at the Nonnymus household. My dear wife is the world's leading
skeptic when it comes to changes in the way I cook. She fought me every
step of the way from the time I brought the IR grill home, when I bought
a second one to scavenge for the extra burner to even "messing up the
shelf on our nice outdoor grill" when I bolted it down and connected it
to the natural gas supply. It finally passed the test when she sent me
back outside with her Tuna steak to "give it some crust from that new
thing."

the unstable elements tend to hang out on
the far left, with some to the right as well.

Many of the new IR gills have both features. The Napoleon line looks to be
very nice.
