Ok, so a few days ago, we grilled steaks on the Weber kettle over a
blazing hot fire of Royal Oak hardwood charcoal. Then last night, we grilled some brats and sausages, and when I went to fire up the grill, I found what looks like a big lump of melted metal in with the left-over coals from steak night. I can only describe it as looking like a big chunk of volcanic rock, but it was definitely melted metal, because I checked it with a magnet. This thing was bigger than my outstretched palm, and almost as big as my outstretched hand, and felt as heavy as you'd expect from a chunk of metal that size. When we did the steaks, I used two chimneys full of hardwood, and I don't recall seeing anything out of the ordinary or heavy come tumbling out of the bag and into the chimneys, but then again I wasn't exactly looking for a chunk of metal either. Anyone ever have something like this happen to them, or know what this chunk of metal might've been? Just curious. |

Never anything as large as you describe, but I've found rocks and metal similar to what you describe. I call 'em "Moon Rocks". Maybe TNW will read this and (again) give his ideas on the origin of these moon rocks. BOB |

Not uncommon to find "unusual" stuff in charcoal, tho' it's usually rocks/dirt. The Naked Whiz's reviews even have a catagory for "strange material". http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpindexpage.htm?bag While charcoal making factories are no doubt not "state of the art" when compared to automated high-tech industries, it does seem that it would be easy enough to sort out magnetic material, especially considering that one is buying the stuff by the pound.... |

If you are sure it is a moon rock try turning it over to see if there
any holes. I heard clangers live in them. Thats showing my age. Stu http://www.cateringappliancesltd.co.uk dakota2112 wrote: wrote: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpindexpage.htm?bag Thanks, that's a great site, tons of info there! I would safely say my chunk of metal looked like a moon rock. |

During the first year, I found very little "extras" in the charcoal. However, the last year, I've gotten all kinds of "surprises"- kinda like Cracker Jacks when I was a kid. Lots of rocks, a few metal objects, some I have no idea, and most disturbing, several times I've found what appeared to be bits of fiberglass insulation. JimnGin |

It happens rarely. Jack |
