My recommendation was the MyWeigh 3001/6001, depending on whether you want up to 3 Kg (3001) or 6 Kg (6001).

Tanita gives value for the price.

Kitchen scale with tare function
I recently purchased a Salter "aquatronic kitchen scale" from Williams
Sonoma for about $70. It's the 5kg / 11lbs version with a tare button and the kg/lbs switch on the front panel. NOTE: there are older (or different) models still on dealers' shelves that have the kg/lbs switch inconveniently located underneath the unit.
