I learned to make a similar salad from my mom. Didn't know it was

water, vinegar, salt, pepper and sugar substitute. I've made it with
dill, too.
My grandmother and my mother used to make this; it doesn't surprise me
that it's Viennese, as grandma's family was from Hungary back when it
was the Austro-Hungarian empire.
Have you ever served it with just a little sour cream?
Nope. We served it with no water and a *lot* of sour cream!
