When I was in Sicily last week, my aunt gave me a few tins of
mackerel
filets in olive oil. She said they are delicious but didn't
really tell me
what to do with them. Two questions: do they taste very fishy?
what are some possibilities for using them in dishes or serving
them?

Mackeral is scrumptious. I *wish* I could find the mackeral that I
get
in Norway here in the US.

The mackeral is just plain good on a simple cracker. With a beer
on
the side. The mackeral I like is in a tomato sauce. Makrel i tomat
saus or something like that.

They are not fishy at all. Just dive in.

I read an article recently (Time magazine, perhaps) which listed
mackerel as one of the fish to avoid due to mercury contamination.
Also on that list was swordfish, tilefish and (IIRC) shark.

You need to be on a pretty constant diet of those fish. More than
once a day.

That's probably true. I try not to be an alarmist. I never stopped
eating eggs when everyone was crying about how high in cholesterol
they are. I didn't stop eating bacon due to the nitrite scare.

I eat fish not every day, but at least once a week. I adore fish.
However, I pretty much stick to locally farmed catfish; then there
is salmon, cod, tilapia. High in Omega3 fatty acids (or so the
current studies show). When I'm 70 and they say all that fish was
bad for me... I'm not sure I'll care

I believe the key is a wide diet, then if anything really is bad for
you, you will not have had too much of it. For the rest, I enjoy
and don't worry and now do not even read all the 'sky is falling'
horror stories!

You forgot the butter witch hunt ! So many friends switched to
margarine and now I see they say a lot of margarines are far worse
than a little butter. If one gets right down to it, probably the
worst thing we ingest is the air we breathe lol

I never forget the witch hunt
