Why would it be in German?
I say it's in Dutch:
"Wijn na bier, plezier;
Bier an wijn, venijn."
I became familiar with the saying because it's illustrated
in a painting on the wall of the Ratherskellar in the student
union on the campus of the University of Wisconsin (along with
several other sayings & pictures in German). If nothing else
if gave my German language class teachers an excuse to have the
the occasional gathering for a beer or two while getting a
lesson in German culture. ;-)
