I think it is possible that J-A would replace the melted knobs, but then the
new ones, if also plastic, would melt--it is inherent in the design. We're
going to discard the whole cooktop ASAP.

Why don't you try to get them to replace those? FWIW, I love my
JA (manufactured by Maytag) fridge. I knew it was a risky purchase but
it has so many features the others don't have and it has been a real
pleasure
to own/use (so far ;-)
