I bought (at the grocery store), peeled and ate my first chestnuts a

myself by driving a piece of shell under my fingernail while trying to
peel the damned thing. And they weren't very good.
I have since been told that they had probably been in the back of the
store for a year. :/ I guess if I ever come across some that I know
are fresh, I might try them again.
You hit the proverbial nail on the the head. They're a low
turnover item, so what they're selling is usually old and
crummy.
Chestnuts are wonderful. Keep looking for a good batch,
it's worth the trouble.
