Light wine?

Actually, this is a (n unattributed) phrase I've seen more than once
in early 20th century literature. The entire quote is "The French are
a gay people fond of light wine and dancing." I omitted "gay" in light
of its current meaning. I suppose it was taken from some popular
travel book. Similar to other characterizations of ethnic/national
groups. BTW, the only 'ethnic' groceries in my area are
Korean-owned, and carry quite a diverse (and seemingly random)
selection of Korean, Thai, Japanese, Hispanic, and (too rarely) Indian
foods and implements.
