Got this off another list that is not related to BBQ. However it does
mention smoked meat, depends on your point of view.
Whiskey: It's no wine
While wine drinkers may be able to justify their habit with a host of
health
benefits attributed to the alcoholic beverage, whiskey drinkers don't have
the same advantage. Whiskey may contain cancer-causing agents, say
researchers from the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands.
Like tobacco and smoked meats, whiskey can contain polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs), cancer-causing chemicals found in the charred insides
of barrels, smoke used to dry germinated barley, or charcoal filters.
Drinking whiskey also is associated with an increased risk for cancer of
the
mouth, throat and lower bowel.
Drinking and brain damage
Many people believe alcohol kills brain cells. Not so, says the British
Medical Journal. Of 209 elderly Australian men studied, 178 of them
drinkers, no signs of intellectual impairment or brain atrophy could be
connected to drinking alcohol.
The men represented a broad range of people, from teetotaler to alcoholic.
Forty percent of the subjects drank amounts deemed hazardous or downright
harmful. Researchers recorded the men's drinking habits over a nine-year
period then conducted neuropsychological tests that showed no evidence of
brain damage.
The study concludes that there's no evidence that "persistent lifelong
consumption of alcohol" in any way impairs brain function in old age.
