My vote would be no on this. My preferred method for imparting smoke
flavor
on a casserole type dish is to smoke one of the ingredients, ie, chiles,
tomatoes, etc. Is it too late to try it that way?

That would ruin it, IMO. There is such a thing as overkill on this bbq
stuff.
