It's known, so the real problem is the development in animals. When the
system takes this disease seriously, things change in the entirety of the
vertical market. For example, beef over 30 months old is not sold here.
Every animal sold for consumption has a label that tells where it was born,
where reared, where slaughtered. Every animal also has a unique number so
that all of that animal can be pulled before it hits supermarket shelves if
the brain tissue tests imperfect.

Italy has had 2 cases in animals that I recall, none in humans yet. The
herds were destroyed, as I remember, but Italian herds are pretty small--
maybe 36 to 50 animals for most growers.

It is amazing to me that anyone would buy meat without knowing what country
it came from.


No choice about that in the US. Not required to state country of origin
on many products, not just meat.
