You're kidding! They've been commonplace in most places I've lived.
Other
favorites are breaded and deep fried zuchinni, cucumber, pepper strips,
whole green beans and others. Several restaurants we used to frequent
back
in Ohio offer a mixed platter of all these goodies as an appetizer, served
with various dips. Yummy, and half healthy...the veggies, not the deep
frying.

Add deep fried pickles to the list and those are very tasty. Add sauerkraut
balls, okra, green tomatoes and some cauliflower to the list of course.
Heck, in the South, if you can cut it to bite size then batter it, flour it,
or cornmeal it and fry it, it's a hit.
