Rationale for rule against dating customers

It's an informal "rule" invented by the servers. Servers are the
most hit upon people in society, and this is their standard
explanation to avoid having to tell you're they're not even
slightly interested in the likes of you.
That's the rule.
In a small place there may not be a rule, in a chain you can bet it is a real rule.
I've asked a couple people (men) who have worked in the business
for a while and they have never hard of such a rule, but they say
the girls use that excuse all the time.
